Impact of Communication Skills Education on Adults’ Ability to Communicate with People from Different Age Groups
Abstract
Communication with people from different age groups is an important aspect of adults’ social, family, educational, workplace, and community interactions. Differences in age may be associated with variations in experiences, communication preferences, vocabulary, expectations, and perspectives, which can sometimes create difficulties in understanding and interaction. Communication Skills Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge and practical competencies for adjusting their communication approaches when interacting with people from different age groups. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Communication Skills Education on adults’ ability to communicate with people from different age groups. Communication Skills Education exposes adults to important principles of effective communication, including active listening, appropriate language use, empathy, patience, questioning, feedback, audience awareness, and non-verbal communication. Through discussions, demonstrations, role-playing, group activities, and practical communication exercises, adults can develop greater awareness of how communication approaches may need to change when interacting with people of different ages. Learners may practice adjusting their choice of words, tone, explanations, pace, and examples according to the characteristics of their communication partners. These experiences can strengthen adults’ flexibility and confidence in communicating across age differences. Adults’ ability to communicate with people from different age groups refers to their capacity to interact clearly, respectfully, and appropriately with individuals of varying ages. This ability involves recognizing differences in experiences and perspectives while maintaining effective listening, appropriate expression, patience, and mutual respect. Communication Skills Education may strengthen this ability by helping adults develop audience awareness and apply adaptable communication strategies to different situations. Improved communication across age groups can support better understanding and more positive relationships among individuals from different generations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to communicate with people from different age groups. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Communication Skills Education on adults’ ability to communicate with people from different age groups. The study is expected to establish that Communication Skills Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to communicate with people from different age groups. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational experiences will demonstrate improved ability to adjust their language, tone, listening approaches, explanations, and interaction styles when communicating with people of different ages. The study may further establish that practical activities, particularly role-playing and communication scenarios involving different age groups, help adults develop greater confidence and flexibility in managing intergenerational communication. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in developing learning activities that strengthen adaptable communication and interpersonal competence. Adult Education programmes can incorporate age-diverse communication scenarios, role-playing exercises, group discussions, listening activities, and practical communication tasks that allow learners to practice interacting with people of different ages. Such activities can help adults recognize communication differences, select appropriate approaches, and transfer their learning to family, workplace, educational, and community situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, families, workplaces, community organizations, and other groups concerned with effective intergenerational communication. It is expected to recommend greater emphasis on active listening, empathy, audience awareness, adaptable language, respectful interaction, and practical communication exercises within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Communication Skills Education can provide adults with useful knowledge and practical competencies for communicating effectively with people from different age groups, thereby promoting clearer understanding, stronger interpersonal relationships, and more positive interaction across generations.
