Impact of Consumer Education on Adults’ Ability to Make Informed Consumer Choices

Abstract

Consumer education refers to the process of providing individuals with knowledge and skills needed to understand products, services, prices, consumer rights, product information, and purchasing conditions, while the ability to make informed consumer choices refers to the capacity of adults to evaluate available options and select products or services based on relevant and reliable information. Inadequate consumer knowledge may expose adults to unsuitable products, misleading information, unnecessary expenditure, and poor purchasing decisions. This study will examine the impact of consumer education on adults’ ability to make informed consumer choices, with the purpose of determining whether consumer education improves adults’ capacity to make appropriate purchasing decisions. Consumer education provides adults with information about product quality, pricing, labels, warranties, consumer rights, advertisements, and available alternatives. Through consumer education, adults can learn how to compare products, assess claims made by sellers, identify relevant product information, and consider the financial implications of purchasing decisions. It can also equip adults with practical knowledge for evaluating products and services before making commitments. The ability to make informed consumer choices involves identifying consumer needs, gathering relevant information, comparing available alternatives, assessing product or service characteristics, and selecting options that provide appropriate value. Adults who possess adequate consumer knowledge may be better prepared to evaluate advertisements, interpret product information, compare prices, and recognise unsuitable purchasing conditions. Consumer education can therefore contribute to adults’ ability to make more informed choices when purchasing goods and services. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults who have participated in selected consumer education activities or programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to consumer education and adults’ ability to make informed consumer choices. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that consumer education has a significant impact on adults’ ability to make informed consumer choices. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to consumer education will demonstrate stronger abilities to compare products, evaluate available information, assess prices and quality, and select suitable goods and services. The study may further establish that consumer education improves adults’ awareness of important factors that should be considered before making purchasing decisions. The findings will have implications for adult education practice and consumer education programmes. Adult educators can incorporate practical consumer-related activities into adult learning programmes to help learners develop useful decision-making skills. Lessons involving product comparison, interpretation of labels, evaluation of advertisements, price assessment, and awareness of consumer rights may provide adults with practical knowledge that can be applied to everyday purchasing situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, consumer education providers, consumer protection organisations, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge for evaluating products and services, while educators may gain information for developing relevant consumer education content. Consumer protection organisations and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives that promote responsible and informed consumer decision-making among adults. The study will recommend that adult education providers should incorporate practical consumer education into relevant adult learning programmes. Educational activities should emphasise product comparison, price evaluation, interpretation of labels and advertisements, consumer rights, and assessment of product quality. Consumer education programmes should also provide adults with practical exercises that reflect common purchasing situations. The study will conclude that consumer education can improve adults’ ability to make informed consumer choices and should be strengthened as an important component of functional adult education.
