Abstract
Consumer numeracy education provides adults with mathematical knowledge and practical skills needed to make informed decisions when purchasing goods and services. The ability to calculate discounts involves determining the amount reduced from an original price and establishing the resulting selling price after the reduction. Difficulty with discount calculations may affect adults’ ability to evaluate promotional offers and determine actual savings. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of consumer numeracy education on adults’ ability to calculate discounts. Consumer numeracy education can equip adults with practical mathematical skills through lessons, demonstrations, guided calculations, exercises, and real-life purchasing examples. Learners can be taught how to work with percentages, identify original prices, calculate discount amounts, and determine final prices. Regular practice using price tags, shopping advertisements, receipts, and other consumer materials can provide adults with opportunities to apply numerical knowledge to everyday purchasing situations. Adults’ ability to calculate discounts involves correctly applying percentage calculations to determine the amount of a reduction and using the result to establish the final price. Consumer numeracy education can strengthen this ability by providing structured opportunities for adults to practise different discount calculations and check their answers. Improved calculation skills may enable adults to evaluate promotional prices more accurately and make better-informed purchasing decisions. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and practical numeracy assessment items designed to measure exposure to consumer numeracy education and adults’ ability to calculate discounts. The instrument will be validated by experts, while reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that consumer numeracy education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to calculate discounts. Adults who receive relevant consumer numeracy education are expected to demonstrate improved accuracy in determining discount amounts and final prices. The findings may also indicate that practical exercises based on everyday shopping situations can strengthen adults’ confidence and competence in performing discount calculations. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of numeracy within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to connect mathematical concepts with practical consumer situations instead of relying mainly on abstract calculations. The use of price tags, promotional offers, shopping examples, and guided problem-solving activities may help learners understand percentage calculations and apply them effectively in daily life. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, consumers, households, community learning centres, and organisations involved in consumer education. Adults may develop stronger practical numeracy skills for evaluating discounts and determining actual purchase prices. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate consumer numeracy activities that focus on practical discount calculations. Adult educators should use realistic shopping scenarios, demonstrations, guided exercises, and repeated practice to strengthen learners’ numerical competence. Relevant organisations should support consumer numeracy programmes that improve adults’ ability to evaluate price reductions accurately. The study concludes that consumer numeracy education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ ability to calculate discounts when instruction is practical, understandable, and relevant to everyday purchasing experiences.
