Impact of Critical Information Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Conflicting Information

Abstract

Critical information education is important in helping adults develop the ability to examine, compare, and evaluate information that may present different or contradictory claims. Adults are increasingly exposed to conflicting information through interpersonal communication, news sources, digital platforms, workplace materials, and community discussions. Without adequate skills for evaluating such information, individuals may experience difficulty determining which claims are credible, relevant, or adequately supported. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of critical information education on adults’ ability to evaluate conflicting information. Critical information education involves developing adults’ knowledge and skills for examining information carefully before accepting or rejecting it. It may include identifying the main claims presented, comparing information from different sources, examining supporting evidence, recognizing inconsistencies, checking the relevance of information, and considering the credibility of sources. Practical exercises involving conflicting statements and different information sources can provide adults with opportunities to apply these evaluation skills. Adults’ ability to evaluate conflicting information refers to their capacity to compare contradictory claims, identify important differences, examine available evidence, and form reasonable judgments based on the information presented. This ability requires adults to avoid accepting information solely because it agrees with their existing beliefs or appears persuasive. Critical information education is expected to improve this ability by strengthening critical thinking, comparison, evidence assessment, and information-evaluation skills. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and an information-evaluation assessment containing conflicting statements and information sources for participants to examine. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of critical information education on adults’ ability to evaluate conflicting information. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to critical information education demonstrate improved ability to evaluate conflicting information compared with those with limited exposure to such education. Participants are also expected to demonstrate greater ability to compare competing claims, identify supporting evidence, recognize inconsistencies, and make more reasoned judgments about conflicting information. These improvements may strengthen adults’ capacity to respond thoughtfully to information encountered in everyday situations. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education by emphasizing the importance of critical information-evaluation skills in adult learning programmes. Educators can use comparative reading exercises, conflicting-information scenarios, source-evaluation activities, group discussions, and evidence-based tasks to develop learners’ analytical abilities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, educators, community facilitators, workplace learners, and individuals who regularly encounter information from different and sometimes contradictory sources. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical activities that enable adults to compare conflicting information and evaluate the evidence supporting different claims. Educators should encourage learners to examine information carefully, consider source credibility, identify inconsistencies, and reach conclusions based on available evidence. It is concluded that critical information education can improve adults’ ability to evaluate conflicting information and support more thoughtful and informed engagement with diverse sources of information.
