Impact of Customer-Service Education on Adults’ Ability to Handle Customer Enquiries
Abstract
Customer-service education refers to structured learning that develops the knowledge, communication skills, and practical abilities required to respond appropriately to customers and address their needs. Adults’ ability to handle customer enquiries involves their capacity to listen carefully, understand customer requests, provide accurate information, communicate professionally, and direct unresolved issues appropriately. Inadequate preparation for handling enquiries may result in unclear responses, customer dissatisfaction, and ineffective service interactions. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of customer-service education on adults’ ability to handle customer enquiries. Customer-service education exposes adults to principles and practices involved in effective enquiry handling. These may include active listening, questioning techniques, information clarification, professional communication, customer identification, response accuracy, patience, and appropriate follow-up. Through demonstrations, role-play, case studies, simulations, and practical exercises, learners can practise responding to different types of customer enquiries. Such learning activities can help adults understand how to gather relevant information and provide appropriate responses during customer interactions. Adults’ ability to handle customer enquiries involves more than simply answering questions. It requires understanding the customer’s request, identifying the information required, communicating a suitable response, and maintaining professionalism throughout the interaction. Customer-service education can strengthen these abilities by exposing adults to realistic enquiry situations and providing opportunities to practise appropriate responses. Improved customer-service knowledge may therefore enhance adults’ ability to manage enquiries efficiently and communicate information in a clear and customer-focused manner. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to determine the impact of customer-service education on adults’ ability to handle customer enquiries. The population will consist of selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a customer-enquiry handling assessment administered before and after exposure to the educational programme. The data obtained will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine changes in participants’ enquiry-handling abilities. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to customer-service education demonstrate improved ability to handle customer enquiries compared with their performance before the educational intervention. Participants are expected to show better abilities in listening to customers, identifying enquiry requirements, providing relevant information, communicating clearly, and responding appropriately to different customer situations. The findings may indicate that structured customer-service education can strengthen adults’ practical competence in handling customer enquiries. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can use role-play, simulations, case studies, demonstrations, and realistic customer-service scenarios to provide learners with opportunities to practise enquiry handling. Learning activities can expose adults to different types of customer requests and encourage them to develop appropriate responses. Constructive feedback from educators and peers may also help learners identify weaknesses and improve their communication and service-handling techniques. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, customer-service personnel, businesses, service organizations, and institutions offering vocational or continuing education programmes. Adults may acquire practical skills that can improve their effectiveness when responding to customer requests, while educators may gain useful information for designing employment-oriented customer-service programmes. Organizations may also benefit from individuals who can handle customer enquiries more accurately, professionally, and efficiently. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate customer-service education through practical demonstrations, role-play, simulations, case studies, and guided enquiry-handling exercises. Adult educators should emphasize active listening, clear communication, accurate information provision, appropriate questioning, patience, and professional conduct. Learners should also receive repeated opportunities to practise handling different customer enquiries and receive constructive feedback on their performance. The study concludes that customer-service education has the potential to improve adults’ ability to handle customer enquiries effectively and contribute to better service interactions.
