Impact of Disaster Education on Emergency Evacuation Readiness among Adult Learners

Abstract

Disaster education refers to structured learning that provides individuals with knowledge and skills for understanding hazards, responding appropriately to emergencies, and reducing the potential effects of disasters, while emergency evacuation readiness refers to the preparedness of adult learners to leave a dangerous location safely and promptly when evacuation becomes necessary. Emergency evacuation readiness is important because effective preparation can help individuals understand evacuation procedures, identify safe routes, respond to warnings, and organize essential items before leaving an affected area. However, inadequate knowledge of evacuation procedures may affect the ability of adults to respond appropriately during emergencies. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of disaster education on emergency evacuation readiness among adult learners. Disaster education exposes adult learners to information about different hazards, emergency warnings, evacuation procedures, safe routes, assembly points, emergency supplies, and appropriate responses during disaster situations. Through adult education programmes, workshops, simulations, demonstrations, community learning activities, and other structured educational experiences, learners can develop practical knowledge about what to do before and during an evacuation. These learning experiences can also provide opportunities for adults to practice emergency procedures and improve their familiarity with appropriate evacuation arrangements. Emergency evacuation readiness among adult learners refers to their ability and preparedness to respond appropriately when evacuation is required. This may include recognizing evacuation warnings, knowing appropriate evacuation routes, identifying designated safe locations, preparing essential items, following evacuation instructions, and understanding how to assist individuals who may require additional support. Disaster education may improve evacuation readiness by providing adults with relevant knowledge and practical opportunities to understand and rehearse appropriate evacuation procedures. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to disaster education and emergency evacuation readiness among adult learners. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of disaster education on emergency evacuation readiness among adult learners. The study is expected to establish that disaster education has a positive impact on emergency evacuation readiness among adult learners. Adult learners with greater exposure to disaster education are expected to demonstrate better understanding of evacuation warnings, emergency procedures, safe routes, assembly points, and other preparedness measures. The study may also identify specific areas of evacuation readiness where adult learners require additional educational support and practical training. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can incorporate practical disaster education through evacuation demonstrations, emergency simulations, scenario-based discussions, and preparedness exercises. These approaches can provide learners with opportunities to understand and practice appropriate responses rather than relying solely on theoretical information. Regular practical activities may also improve learners’ familiarity with evacuation procedures and emergency decision-making. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, adult education programme coordinators, emergency management organizations, community education providers, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge and preparedness for emergency evacuation, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing practical disaster education content. Emergency management organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen disaster preparedness education within adult learning programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical disaster education and emergency evacuation activities into relevant learning programmes. Adult educators should use demonstrations, simulations, evacuation drills, visual materials, and realistic scenarios to strengthen learners’ understanding of evacuation procedures. Relevant emergency management organizations should support adult education providers with accurate preparedness information and appropriate training resources. The study concludes that disaster education can contribute to improved emergency evacuation readiness among adult learners by providing the knowledge and practical skills required to respond appropriately when evacuation becomes necessary.
