Abstract
Ergonomic education refers to structured learning that provides adults with knowledge and practical skills for arranging and using work environments in ways that support safety, comfort, and efficient task performance. Adults’ adoption of safe workstation practices involves their consistent use of appropriate workstation arrangements, working positions, equipment placement, and work habits that reduce unnecessary physical strain. Inadequate knowledge of ergonomic principles may encourage unsafe workstation habits and discomfort during work activities. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of ergonomic education on adults’ adoption of safe workstation practices. Ergonomic education introduces adults to basic principles of workstation organization and safe work practices. Learning may cover appropriate positioning of chairs, desks, screens, keyboards, tools, and other frequently used equipment, as well as maintaining suitable working postures and organizing workspaces effectively. Through demonstrations, illustrations, practical exercises, workplace scenarios, and guided activities, learners can observe how workstation arrangements influence comfort and physical demands during work. Such education can help adults understand practical ways of creating and maintaining safer workstations. Adults’ adoption of safe workstation practices involves applying appropriate ergonomic principles consistently while performing work tasks. This includes maintaining suitable working positions, arranging frequently used equipment appropriately, keeping work areas organized, and making reasonable adjustments to improve comfort and reduce unnecessary strain. Ergonomic education can strengthen these practices by providing adults with practical knowledge and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate workstation arrangements. Increased understanding may therefore encourage adults to apply safer workstation practices during their regular work activities. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to determine the impact of ergonomic education on adults’ adoption of safe workstation practices. The population will consist of selected adult learners or workers, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured workstation-practice assessment administered before and after exposure to the ergonomic education programme. The data obtained will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine changes in participants’ adoption of safe workstation practices. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to ergonomic education demonstrate greater adoption of safe workstation practices compared with their practices before the educational intervention. Participants are expected to show improved application of appropriate workstation arrangements, working positions, equipment placement, and workspace organization. The findings may indicate that practical ergonomic education can strengthen adults’ awareness and application of safer practices within their work environments. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can use workstation demonstrations, practical exercises, visual materials, workplace scenarios, and guided observation activities to make ergonomic education more practical. Learners can be encouraged to examine workstation arrangements and identify areas that require appropriate adjustment. Repeated practice and feedback may also help adults develop greater consistency in applying ergonomic principles during work activities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, workers, adult educators, employers, workplace organizations, and institutions providing occupational health and continuing education programmes. Adults may gain practical knowledge for organizing their workstations more appropriately, while educators may obtain useful information for developing workplace-oriented ergonomic learning activities. Employers may also benefit from educational programmes that encourage workers to pay greater attention to safe workstation arrangements and work habits. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate ergonomic education through demonstrations, practical workstation exercises, illustrations, workplace scenarios, and guided activities. Adult educators should emphasize appropriate workstation arrangement, suitable working positions, equipment placement, workspace organization, and practical adjustments. Learners should also be given opportunities to practise identifying and correcting unsuitable workstation arrangements. The study concludes that ergonomic education has the potential to improve adults’ adoption of safe workstation practices and promote greater attention to safety and comfort in work environments.
