Impact of Family Learning Activities on Educational Interaction between Parents and Children
Abstract
Family learning activities are educational activities carried out by parents and children together to promote learning, knowledge sharing, and the development of useful skills, while educational interaction refers to the communication, exchange of ideas, guidance, and learning-related engagement that takes place between parents and children. Meaningful educational interaction within the family can create opportunities for children to receive guidance and for parents to understand their children’s learning needs. However, limited involvement in shared learning activities may reduce opportunities for constructive educational interaction at home. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of family learning activities on educational interaction between parents and children. Family learning activities may include shared reading, educational discussions, homework support, educational games, storytelling, practical learning exercises, and visits to educationally relevant places. These activities encourage parents and children to learn together while creating opportunities for questions, explanations, discussions, and exchange of experiences. Regular involvement in family learning activities can make learning a shared experience and provide parents with opportunities to observe and respond to their children’s educational needs. Educational interaction between parents and children involves discussions about schoolwork, explanation of difficult concepts, exchange of educational ideas, questioning, feedback, encouragement, and communication about learning experiences. Effective interaction can help children receive guidance and develop greater interest in learning, while parents gain a better understanding of their children’s educational progress. Family learning activities may therefore influence educational interaction by creating regular situations in which parents and children communicate and engage in learning together. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents and their school-age children in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in family learning activities and the level of educational interaction between parents and children. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that family learning activities have a positive impact on educational interaction between parents and children. Families that regularly engage in shared learning activities are expected to demonstrate more frequent and meaningful educational communication. The study may further establish that activities such as shared reading, discussions, and homework support provide opportunities for parents and children to exchange ideas and develop stronger learning-oriented relationships. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because educational interaction at home can reinforce classroom learning and provide children with additional opportunities to discuss and practise what they have learned. Teachers may also benefit when parents have a better understanding of their children’s learning experiences. Encouraging family learning activities can therefore extend educational engagement beyond the classroom and strengthen cooperation between home and school. The study will be beneficial to parents, children, teachers, school administrators, adult education practitioners, education planners, and researchers. Parents may gain greater awareness of practical ways to create learning opportunities at home, while children may benefit from increased educational guidance and communication. Adult education practitioners may also use the findings to develop family-oriented learning activities that encourage constructive educational interaction within households. The study will recommend that parents incorporate simple and regular learning activities such as shared reading, educational discussions, homework support, and learning games into family routines. Schools and adult education practitioners should also provide guidance that helps parents organize meaningful learning activities with their children. It is concluded that family learning activities can provide valuable opportunities for strengthening educational interaction between parents and children and promoting a supportive learning environment at home.
