Impact of Farmer Education Programmes on the Adoption of Post-Harvest Management Practices

Abstract

Farmer education programmes refer to organized educational activities designed to provide farmers with knowledge and skills for improving agricultural production and handling practices, while adoption of post-harvest management practices refers to the extent to which farmers apply appropriate methods for handling, storing, processing, packaging, and preserving agricultural produce after harvest. Effective post-harvest management is important for reducing losses, maintaining produce quality, improving food availability, and increasing farmers’ returns. However, inadequate knowledge and limited exposure to appropriate post-harvest techniques may contribute to poor handling and storage practices. This study will examine the impact of farmer education programmes on the adoption of post-harvest management practices. Farmer education programmes can provide instruction on appropriate harvesting methods, sorting and grading, drying, storage, processing, packaging, transportation, pest control, and preservation of agricultural produce. Learning may be delivered through agricultural extension classes, demonstrations, workshops, field-based instruction, farmer training sessions, and practical learning activities. These approaches can enable farmers to understand appropriate post-harvest techniques and develop the practical knowledge required to apply them effectively. The adoption of post-harvest management practices involves farmers’ consistent application of appropriate techniques for protecting agricultural produce from damage, deterioration, contamination, and unnecessary losses after harvest. Such practices may include proper drying, suitable storage, careful handling, sorting, grading, packaging, and appropriate transportation. Farmer education programmes can influence adoption by improving farmers’ knowledge of these techniques and demonstrating how they can be applied under practical farming conditions. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise farmers participating in selected farmer education and agricultural extension programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to farmer education programmes and the adoption of post-harvest management practices. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that farmer education programmes have a positive impact on the adoption of post-harvest management practices. It is expected that farmers who receive relevant education and training will demonstrate greater application of appropriate methods of harvesting, handling, drying, storage, processing, packaging, and preservation than farmers with limited exposure to such programmes. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by demonstrating the value of practical agricultural education for improving farmers’ application of knowledge. Adult educators and agricultural extension educators can use demonstrations, field-based learning, practical exercises, and locally relevant examples to teach post-harvest management techniques. Such approaches can make agricultural learning more practical and help farmers apply acquired knowledge to real farming situations. The study will be significant to farmers, adult educators, agricultural extension educators, agricultural organizations, farmer associations, agricultural development agencies, and policymakers. Farmers may benefit from improved knowledge and application of post-harvest management techniques, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing more practical agricultural education programmes. Agricultural organizations and development agencies may also use the findings to strengthen farmer training initiatives aimed at reducing post-harvest losses. The study recommends that farmer education programmes should place greater emphasis on practical post-harvest management techniques and provide farmers with opportunities to observe and practice appropriate methods. Adult and agricultural educators should employ demonstrations, field training, practical exercises, and accessible educational materials when delivering post-harvest education. Agricultural extension agencies and farmer organizations should also strengthen training opportunities that address the specific post-harvest challenges faced by farmers. The study concludes that effective farmer education programmes can contribute to greater adoption of appropriate post-harvest management practices.
