Impact of Flood Education on Adults’ Household Flood-Response Practices
Abstract
Flood education provides adults with knowledge and practical skills needed to understand flood hazards and respond appropriately when flooding occurs. Household flood-response practices refer to the actions taken by household members before, during, and immediately after flooding to protect lives, property, essential belongings, and household resources. Appropriate response practices are important because timely and informed actions can reduce exposure to flood-related dangers and minimize avoidable losses. However, inadequate knowledge of appropriate flood-response measures may affect the ability of adults to respond effectively during flood situations. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of flood education on adults’ household flood-response practices. Flood education can equip adults with knowledge about flood hazards, warning signs, response procedures, safe movement during flooding, protection of household belongings, and appropriate actions during and after flood events. Through structured lessons, demonstrations, discussions, visual materials, and realistic flood scenarios, adults can learn how to recognize dangerous situations and understand appropriate responses. Practical learning activities can also help adults connect flood-related knowledge with situations that may occur within their households. Household flood-response practices involve the practical application of knowledge when a flood situation develops. Adults who possess adequate flood-response knowledge may be better able to respond to warnings, protect essential household items, avoid hazardous areas, assist vulnerable household members, and follow appropriate safety procedures. Flood education may therefore improve household flood-response practices by strengthening adults’ understanding of appropriate actions and providing opportunities to practise responding to realistic flood situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess respondents’ exposure to flood education and their household flood-response practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of flood education on adults’ household flood-response practices. The study is expected to establish that flood education has a positive impact on adults’ household flood-response practices. Adults who receive relevant flood education are expected to demonstrate stronger application of appropriate response measures during flood situations. The study may also reveal improved ability to respond to warnings, protect household resources, avoid dangerous situations, and organize appropriate responses within the household. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of practical disaster-related knowledge in adult education programmes. Adult educators may be encouraged to use realistic flood scenarios, demonstrations, visual materials, discussions, and practical response exercises when teaching flood education. Such approaches can help adults connect theoretical knowledge with the practical decisions required during actual flood situations. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, households, community learning centres, disaster-risk educators, curriculum planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may develop stronger knowledge and skills for responding to household flood situations, while educators may gain useful approaches for teaching practical flood-response knowledge. Curriculum planners and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen flood-related safety and preparedness content within adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical flood education that emphasizes appropriate household response practices. Adult educators should use realistic scenarios, demonstrations, visual materials, discussions, and participatory exercises to strengthen learners’ ability to respond appropriately to flood situations. It is concluded that effective flood education can improve adults’ household flood-response practices and support safer and more informed household responses during flooding.
