Impact of Gender-Sensitivity Education on Adults’ Recognition of Gender Stereotypes
Abstract
Gender-Sensitivity Education can play an important role in helping adults recognize and understand gender stereotypes that may influence perceptions, interactions, and expectations in everyday life. Gender stereotypes involve generalized assumptions about the characteristics, abilities, behaviours, and roles of people based on gender. When adults are unable to recognize such stereotypes, they may accept them as normal or apply them when making judgments about others. Gender-Sensitivity Education can provide adults with knowledge and learning experiences that encourage awareness and critical examination of stereotypical beliefs. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Gender-Sensitivity Education on adults’ recognition of gender stereotypes. Gender-Sensitivity Education exposes adults to concepts relating to gender roles, social expectations, equality, inclusion, discrimination, and stereotypical representations. Through discussions, case studies, group activities, reflective exercises, and analysis of everyday situations, learners can examine how gender stereotypes may appear in language, social interactions, family expectations, workplaces, educational settings, and community life. Such educational experiences can help adults identify assumptions that assign particular behaviours or responsibilities to people based solely on gender. Exposure to different perspectives may also strengthen learners’ awareness of the difference between individual characteristics and generalized gender expectations. Adults’ recognition of gender stereotypes refers to their ability to identify, describe, and distinguish stereotypical assumptions about the roles, abilities, behaviours, and characteristics of people based on gender. This ability involves noticing generalized expectations, identifying stereotypical statements or representations, and understanding when an assumption is based on gender rather than individual characteristics or circumstances. Gender-Sensitivity Education may strengthen this ability by providing structured opportunities for adults to examine examples of stereotypes and reflect on their underlying assumptions. Improved recognition can provide a foundation for more informed attitudes and interactions in different social environments. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ recognition of gender stereotypes. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Gender-Sensitivity Education on adults’ recognition of gender stereotypes. The study is expected to establish that Gender-Sensitivity Education has a positive impact on adults’ recognition of gender stereotypes. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved ability to identify stereotypical statements, expectations, and assumptions associated with gender. The study may further establish that practical discussions, case analysis, and reflective activities enable adults to recognize stereotypes in everyday situations and distinguish generalized gender assumptions from individual abilities and circumstances. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in developing learning activities that promote awareness and critical examination of gender stereotypes. Practitioners may incorporate realistic scenarios, group discussions, reflective exercises, case studies, and analysis of social messages into Adult Education programmes. These activities can give adults opportunities to identify stereotypical assumptions, discuss their implications, and develop greater awareness of how such assumptions may influence social interactions and expectations. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, families, workplaces, community organizations, and other stakeholders concerned with gender awareness and social inclusion. It is expected to recommend greater integration of gender-sensitivity activities that help adults recognize and critically examine gender stereotypes in everyday situations. The study concludes that Gender-Sensitivity Education can contribute to adults’ recognition of gender stereotypes by strengthening awareness, critical reflection, and the ability to identify generalized gender-based assumptions in different social contexts.
