Impact of Intergenerational Education on Adults’ Attitudes toward Knowledge Exchange between Generations

Abstract

Intergenerational education is an important aspect of Adult Education that promotes learning and interaction among people from different age groups. Adults’ attitudes toward knowledge exchange between generations refer to their perceptions, acceptance, openness, and willingness to share knowledge, skills, experiences, and ideas with people belonging to other generations. Differences in age, experience, communication patterns, and perceptions may sometimes create barriers to effective knowledge exchange. This study will examine the impact of intergenerational education on adults’ attitudes toward knowledge exchange between generations, with the purpose of determining whether educational experiences that encourage interaction across age groups can promote more positive attitudes toward intergenerational learning and knowledge sharing. Intergenerational education provides opportunities for adults to learn through interaction, dialogue, collaboration, and exchange of experiences with people from different generations. It can expose participants to the value of traditional knowledge, contemporary skills, occupational experiences, cultural practices, technological knowledge, and other forms of useful learning that may exist across generations. Through group discussions, collaborative projects, storytelling, mentoring activities, demonstrations, and shared learning tasks, adults can recognize that different generations possess knowledge and experiences that can complement one another. Such educational experiences can also encourage participants to challenge negative assumptions about age and appreciate the contribution of different generations to collective learning. Positive attitudes toward intergenerational knowledge exchange are important because knowledge sharing between generations can support learning continuity, mutual understanding, cooperation, and preservation of valuable experiences. Adults who have favourable attitudes may be more willing to listen to people from other age groups, share their own experiences, seek knowledge from others, and participate in activities that encourage reciprocal learning. Intergenerational education may influence these attitudes by providing meaningful opportunities for adults to interact with different generations in supportive learning environments. Such interaction can increase appreciation of diverse experiences and encourage adults to view knowledge exchange as a reciprocal process rather than as something limited to a particular age group. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes and intergenerational learning activities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participants’ exposure to intergenerational education and their attitudes toward knowledge exchange between generations. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of intergenerational education on adults’ attitudes toward knowledge exchange between generations. The study is expected to establish that intergenerational education has a positive impact on adults’ attitudes toward knowledge exchange between generations. Adults who receive greater exposure to intergenerational learning activities may demonstrate increased openness to sharing experiences, learning from people of different ages, appreciating diverse forms of knowledge, and participating in reciprocal learning relationships. The study is also expected to indicate that structured interaction and collaborative learning activities can reduce negative perceptions associated with age differences and encourage greater appreciation of the knowledge contributions of different generations. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, learning facilitators, and programmes that promote lifelong and community-based learning. Incorporating intergenerational activities into adult learning can create opportunities for participants to exchange practical knowledge and experiences across age groups. Activities such as mentoring, storytelling, collaborative projects, peer demonstrations, group discussions, and experience-sharing sessions can make learning more inclusive and interactive. These approaches may help adults develop more positive attitudes toward people from different generations and encourage continued exchange of useful knowledge within learning and community environments. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, families, community leaders, and other stakeholders interested in strengthening intergenerational learning. It will recommend that Adult Education programmes create structured opportunities for adults from different generations to interact, collaborate, and exchange knowledge and experiences. Learning activities should encourage mutual respect, active participation, and recognition of the valuable contributions that different age groups can make to collective learning. The study will conclude that effective intergenerational education can promote positive attitudes toward knowledge exchange and contribute to stronger learning relationships between generations.
