Impact of Parenting Education on Parents’ Involvement in Children’s Educational Development

Abstract

Parenting education refers to organized learning programmes that provide parents with knowledge, skills, and guidance for effectively supporting their children’s growth and development, while children’s educational development involves the gradual improvement of their academic abilities, learning habits, knowledge, and educational progress. Effective parental involvement can provide children with guidance, encouragement, learning support, and educational resources that contribute to their development. However, some parents may lack adequate knowledge of effective ways to support their children’s educational needs. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of parenting education on parents’ involvement in children’s educational development. Parenting education programmes may involve workshops, seminars, counselling sessions, practical parenting classes, educational discussions, and guidance on children’s learning needs. These programmes can equip parents with knowledge about learning support, educational expectations, study habits, school requirements, and appropriate ways of responding to children’s academic needs. Through continued exposure to parenting education, parents may develop greater confidence and practical skills for supporting their children’s educational development. Parents’ involvement in children’s educational development includes monitoring academic progress, encouraging learning, discussing educational goals, providing learning materials, supporting study routines, and communicating with teachers when necessary. Such involvement provides children with additional educational support beyond the classroom and may encourage positive learning habits. Parenting education may therefore influence parental involvement by improving parents’ understanding of their educational responsibilities and providing practical strategies for supporting children’s development. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents of school-age children in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to parenting education and parents’ involvement in children’s educational development. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that parenting education has a positive impact on parents’ involvement in children’s educational development. Parents who participate in parenting education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of effective educational support strategies and increased involvement in their children’s learning and academic progress. The study may further establish that parenting education can improve parents’ confidence in responding to children’s educational needs. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because effective parental involvement can reinforce classroom instruction and provide children with additional opportunities for learning at home. Teachers may benefit from stronger cooperation with informed parents, while children may receive more consistent encouragement and educational support. Parenting education can therefore serve as an important approach for strengthening the connection between children’s school experiences and parental support. The study will be beneficial to parents, children, teachers, school administrators, adult education practitioners, education planners, and researchers. Parents may gain practical knowledge for supporting their children’s educational development, while teachers and school administrators may gain insight into ways of encouraging effective parental involvement. Adult education practitioners and education planners may also use the findings to improve parenting education programmes that address parents’ educational responsibilities. The study will recommend that parenting education programmes provide parents with practical guidance on monitoring learning progress, establishing supportive study routines, encouraging educational goals, and communicating effectively with schools. Schools should also collaborate with adult education practitioners to provide accessible parenting education opportunities. It is concluded that effective parenting education can strengthen parents’ knowledge and capacity to become more actively involved in their children’s educational development.
