Impact of Peer Interaction on Participation among Adult Learners
Abstract
Peer interaction refers to the communication, collaboration, exchange of ideas, and learning relationships that adult learners develop with one another during educational activities, while participation refers to the extent to which learners attend, contribute, engage, and take part in learning activities. Effective peer interaction is important in adult education because adult learners often bring different experiences, knowledge, and perspectives into the learning environment. However, limited interaction among learners may reduce opportunities for collaboration and active involvement. Therefore, this study examines the impact of peer interaction on participation among adult learners. Peer interaction involves learners communicating with one another, sharing experiences, discussing learning tasks, providing mutual assistance, and working together to solve problems. It may occur through group discussions, peer tutoring, collaborative assignments, study groups, classroom conversations, and informal learning relationships. Positive peer interaction can create opportunities for adults to learn from one another, exchange practical knowledge, develop confidence, and receive support during learning activities. The quality and frequency of these interactions may therefore influence how actively adult learners engage with their educational programmes. Participation among adult learners involves regular attendance, involvement in classroom activities, contribution to discussions, completion of learning tasks, and willingness to engage with other learners and facilitators. Adult learners may participate more actively when they experience supportive relationships and opportunities to communicate with peers. Peer interaction can encourage learners to express their ideas, seek assistance, share experiences, and become more involved in learning activities. Consequently, effective peer interaction may contribute to improved participation among adult learners. The study will adopt a correlational research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes, while an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure peer interaction and learners’ participation. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the relationship between peer interaction and participation among adult learners. The study is expected to establish that peer interaction has a significant influence on participation among adult learners. Adult learners who experience regular communication, cooperation, peer support, and collaborative learning opportunities are expected to demonstrate higher levels of involvement in educational activities. The findings are also expected to indicate that limited opportunities for peer interaction may be associated with lower participation in learning activities. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adults. Adult education facilitators may need to create learning environments that encourage meaningful interaction among learners through group discussions, collaborative tasks, peer-learning activities, and experience-sharing sessions. Such approaches can provide adult learners with opportunities to contribute their knowledge and experiences while developing supportive learning relationships. Facilitators may also need to ensure that peer interaction remains inclusive and beneficial to learners with different educational backgrounds. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult education facilitators, programme administrators, adult education institutions, and education planners. Adult learners may benefit from increased opportunities for collaborative learning and mutual support. Facilitators may gain a better understanding of the role of peer relationships in encouraging learner participation, while programme administrators may use the findings to strengthen learning environments that promote interaction. Education planners may also benefit from evidence on approaches that can improve learner involvement in adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide structured opportunities for peer interaction through collaborative learning activities, group discussions, peer-support initiatives, and learner-led activities. Facilitators should encourage respectful communication and active contribution among learners. Adult education institutions should also create supportive learning environments where learners can exchange experiences and assist one another. In conclusion, strengthening peer interaction may provide an effective approach to improving participation among adult learners.
