Impact of Research-Reading Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Relevant Study Findings

Abstract

Research-reading education is an important approach to developing adults’ ability to read, understand, and extract useful information from research studies. It provides learners with skills for examining research materials, locating important sections, understanding research questions, and identifying findings that are relevant to a particular issue. Adults are increasingly exposed to research-based information through academic materials, reports, professional publications, and other information sources, yet difficulty in identifying relevant study findings may limit their effective use of such information. This study therefore examines the impact of research-reading education on adults’ ability to identify relevant study findings. Research-reading education can equip adults with practical strategies for approaching research materials systematically. Through guided reading, learners can be exposed to techniques for identifying research objectives, examining study findings, recognizing key results, and distinguishing relevant information from details that do not directly address the issue under consideration. Activities such as reading selected research articles, locating specific findings, summarizing results, comparing findings across studies, and answering research-based questions can provide opportunities for adults to develop stronger research-reading skills. The ability to identify relevant study findings involves recognizing the results that directly relate to a particular research question, problem, or information need. Adults need to understand the difference between general background information, methodological details, supporting explanations, and findings that directly address the study objectives. Research-reading education can improve this ability by helping learners focus on the purpose of a study and use relevant indicators within research reports to locate meaningful findings. This competence can enable adults to use research information more efficiently for learning, occupational activities, community participation, and informed decision-making. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment of participants’ ability to identify relevant study findings. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of research-reading education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that research-reading education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify relevant study findings. Adults exposed to structured research-reading activities are expected to demonstrate improved abilities to locate important findings, connect results with study objectives, distinguish relevant findings from less relevant information, and extract useful evidence from research materials. The expected findings may further indicate that regular practice with research texts improves adults’ confidence and efficiency when searching for specific information within research studies. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education programme planning and practice. Adult Education practitioners may need to incorporate practical research-reading exercises into learning programmes and provide learners with opportunities to work with accessible research materials. Guided reading activities, finding-identification exercises, research summaries, comparative reading tasks, and structured discussions can help adults develop the ability to locate information that directly addresses a particular issue. These activities may also encourage learners to approach research materials more systematically rather than reading lengthy studies without a clear information purpose. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, researchers, community organizations, and other stakeholders interested in strengthening adults’ research-literacy skills. It may provide useful evidence on the contribution of research-reading education to adults’ ability to identify and use relevant findings from research studies. The study recommends greater integration of practical research-reading activities into Adult Education programmes, with emphasis on locating, comparing, and interpreting relevant findings. It concludes that strengthening adults’ research-reading skills can improve their ability to efficiently engage with research information and apply relevant findings to learning and decision-making.
