Impact of Road-Safety Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Safe Vehicle Practices
Abstract
Road-safety education provides adults with knowledge and practical information needed to promote safer behaviour around vehicles and road environments. Safe vehicle practices refer to the appropriate measures and behaviours associated with the safe use, handling, and maintenance of vehicles, including the use of seat belts, checking vehicle conditions, observing speed limits, avoiding distractions, and ensuring that vehicles are suitable for safe travel. Inadequate knowledge of safe vehicle practices may expose road users to preventable risks and unsafe situations. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of road-safety education on adults’ knowledge of safe vehicle practices. Road-safety education can improve adults’ knowledge through structured lessons, demonstrations, discussions, visual materials, and practical examples. Learning activities may introduce adults to basic vehicle safety checks, proper use of safety equipment, responsible vehicle operation, the dangers of distracted driving, appropriate speed management, and the importance of maintaining vehicles in safe operating condition. Relating these concepts to familiar transportation situations can help adults understand why safe vehicle practices are important and how they should be applied. Knowledge of safe vehicle practices enables adults to recognize appropriate measures that can contribute to safer vehicle use. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to identify important safety checks, understand the purpose of vehicle safety equipment, recognize behaviours that can increase road risks, and appreciate the importance of responsible vehicle operation. Road-safety education may therefore strengthen adults’ knowledge by providing clear information and opportunities to apply safety concepts to realistic vehicle-related situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a knowledge assessment covering selected safe vehicle practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of road-safety education on adults’ knowledge of safe vehicle practices. The study is expected to establish that road-safety education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of safe vehicle practices. Adults who receive relevant road-safety education are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of vehicle safety checks, appropriate use of safety equipment, responsible vehicle operation, distraction avoidance, and other basic measures associated with safer vehicle use. The study may also indicate increased awareness of the importance of maintaining vehicles in suitable operating condition. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of practical safety knowledge in adult education programmes. Adult educators may be encouraged to incorporate vehicle-related examples, demonstrations, illustrations, discussions, and scenario-based activities into road-safety lessons. Practical learning approaches can make safety concepts easier to understand and help adults connect classroom knowledge with situations encountered during everyday transportation. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community learning centres, road-safety educators, curriculum planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may develop stronger knowledge of safe vehicle practices, while educators may gain useful approaches for presenting practical vehicle-safety information. Curriculum planners and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen road-safety components within adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate relevant road-safety education focused on safe vehicle practices. Adult educators should use practical demonstrations, visual resources, realistic scenarios, and participatory discussions to reinforce adults’ understanding of vehicle safety. It is concluded that effective road-safety education can improve adults’ knowledge of safe vehicle practices and support greater awareness of responsible vehicle use.
