Impact of Road-Safety Education on Adults’ Pedestrian Safety Practices

Abstract

Road-safety education is an important aspect of adult learning that provides individuals with knowledge and practical skills for safer movement within road environments. Pedestrian safety practices refer to the behaviours adopted by pedestrians to reduce their exposure to road hazards, such as using designated crossing points, observing traffic signals, paying attention to approaching vehicles, and avoiding unsafe road-crossing behaviours. Despite the importance of these practices, some adults may engage in unsafe pedestrian behaviours due to inadequate knowledge or limited awareness of appropriate road-safety measures. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of road-safety education on adults’ pedestrian safety practices. Road-safety education exposes adults to information about pedestrian responsibilities, common road hazards, traffic rules, and appropriate safety behaviours. Through structured lessons, demonstrations, discussions, visual materials, and practical examples, adults can learn how to identify safe places to cross roads, observe traffic signals, maintain awareness of surrounding vehicles, and respond appropriately to different road situations. Repeated exposure to practical safety information can strengthen adults’ understanding of appropriate pedestrian behaviour. Pedestrian safety practices involve the application of road-safety knowledge during everyday movement. Adults who understand basic pedestrian safety principles may be more likely to use designated crossing facilities, obey pedestrian signals, look for approaching traffic before crossing, and exercise caution around busy roads. Road-safety education may therefore influence pedestrian safety practices by improving adults’ knowledge and encouraging the consistent application of appropriate safety behaviours in real-life situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess respondents’ exposure to road-safety education and their pedestrian safety practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of road-safety education on adults’ pedestrian safety practices. The study is expected to establish that road-safety education has a positive impact on adults’ pedestrian safety practices. Adults who receive road-safety education are expected to demonstrate greater adherence to appropriate pedestrian behaviours, including careful road crossing, attention to traffic signals, use of designated crossing areas, and increased awareness of potential road hazards. The study may also reveal improved application of road-safety knowledge during everyday pedestrian activities. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of practical safety knowledge in adult education programmes. Adult educators may be encouraged to use realistic road situations, demonstrations, visual resources, discussions, and practical exercises when teaching pedestrian safety. Linking road-safety concepts to adults’ everyday experiences may improve understanding and encourage the transfer of learned safety behaviours into real-life situations. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community learning centres, road-safety educators, curriculum planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may develop stronger awareness of appropriate pedestrian behaviours, while educators may gain useful approaches for incorporating practical road-safety education into adult learning programmes. Curriculum planners and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen safety-oriented learning content for adults. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical road-safety education that emphasizes appropriate pedestrian behaviours. Adult educators should use demonstrations, visual materials, realistic scenarios, and participatory activities to reinforce safe pedestrian practices. It is concluded that effective road-safety education can contribute to improved pedestrian safety practices among adults and encourage safer behaviour within road environments.
