Impact of Study Skills Education on Information-Retrieval Skills among Adult Learners

Abstract

Study skills education refers to the systematic teaching of techniques that help learners organize, locate, process, and use information effectively, while information-retrieval skills refer to the ability to identify information needs, locate relevant information from appropriate sources, and obtain information efficiently for learning purposes. For adult learners, effective information retrieval is important because educational activities increasingly require access to textbooks, reference materials, digital resources, databases, and other sources of information. However, inadequate knowledge of information-retrieval techniques may make it difficult for adult learners to obtain relevant learning materials efficiently. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of study skills education on information-retrieval skills among adult learners. Study skills education exposes adult learners to practical techniques for improving the organization and management of learning activities. It may include instruction on identifying information needs, selecting appropriate sources, using keywords, searching reference materials, organizing retrieved information, and evaluating the relevance of information obtained. Through guided exercises and practical learning activities, learners can develop systematic approaches to locating information required for academic and personal learning tasks. Information-retrieval skills involve identifying the type of information required, determining suitable sources, using effective search strategies, locating relevant materials, and obtaining information that addresses a particular learning need. Adult learners with good information-retrieval skills can more effectively search through available learning resources and locate materials relevant to their educational activities. Study skills education can therefore contribute to the development of these skills by providing learners with practical strategies for searching, locating, and organizing useful information. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to study skills education and information-retrieval skills among adult learners. The data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that study skills education has a positive impact on information-retrieval skills among adult learners. Adult learners who receive study skills education are expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify information needs, select appropriate sources, use effective search approaches, locate relevant learning materials, and retrieve information required for their educational activities. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may incorporate practical information-retrieval exercises into study skills instruction and provide learners with opportunities to search for information using different learning resources. Such activities may help learners develop systematic approaches to locating relevant materials and become more efficient in obtaining information for independent learning. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme coordinators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved ability to locate relevant learning information, while adult educators may gain useful strategies for strengthening study skills instruction. Programme coordinators and policymakers may also use the findings to improve learning-support activities that promote effective information access among adult learners. The study will recommend that adult education programmes integrate information-retrieval activities into study skills education and provide learners with regular opportunities to practise locating information from different learning sources. Adult educators should guide learners in identifying information needs, selecting suitable sources, developing effective search strategies, and organizing retrieved materials. The study will conclude that effective study skills education can strengthen information-retrieval skills among adult learners and support more efficient learning.
