Impact of Tailoring Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Garment Finishing

Abstract

Garment finishing is an important stage of clothing production that involves the final processes required to improve the appearance, durability, comfort, and overall quality of garments. Tailoring education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and skills related to different garment finishing procedures. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate finishing techniques due to inadequate exposure to structured tailoring education. This study will examine the impact of tailoring education on adults’ knowledge of garment finishing. Tailoring education may expose adults to various garment finishing activities, including seam finishing, hemming, fastening, pressing, trimming, button attachment, zipper application, and other procedures used to improve the final appearance of clothing. Through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, and practical exercises, learners can develop familiarity with the appropriate procedures and materials required for different finishing tasks. Such activities can help adults connect theoretical knowledge with practical garment production. Adults’ knowledge of garment finishing refers to their ability to identify, explain, and describe the procedures and techniques used to complete garments appropriately. It may include knowledge of suitable finishing methods, appropriate tools and materials, seam treatment, hemming procedures, fastening methods, pressing techniques, and quality considerations. Tailoring education may improve this knowledge by providing practical learning experiences that allow adults to observe and practise different finishing procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected tailoring, vocational, or garment-production programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a garment finishing knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant finishing procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of tailoring education on adults’ knowledge of garment finishing. The study is expected to establish that participation in tailoring education may improve adults’ knowledge of garment finishing procedures. Adults exposed to structured practical learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of seam finishing, hemming, fastening, pressing, trimming, button attachment, zipper application, and other finishing techniques. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and repeated hands-on activities are useful for helping adults understand the importance and application of appropriate garment finishing procedures. The study will conclude that tailoring education can provide an effective avenue for developing adults’ knowledge of garment finishing. It will recommend that tailoring programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, suitable equipment and materials, guided exercises, and sufficient opportunities for repeated practice. Improving adults’ knowledge of garment finishing may contribute to better garment quality, practical competence, vocational development, self-employment, and income-generating opportunities.
