Impact of Traditional Knowledge Education on Participation among Community Adults

Abstract

Traditional knowledge education refers to the process of transmitting locally developed knowledge, skills, values, practices, and experiences from one generation or group to another, while participation among community adults refers to the active involvement of adults in activities, programmes, and initiatives that contribute to the functioning and development of their communities. Traditional knowledge can provide adults with practical understanding of local resources, customs, occupations, and community practices. However, limited opportunities for learning and transmitting such knowledge may affect adults’ involvement in community-based activities. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of traditional knowledge education on participation among community adults. Traditional knowledge education may occur through storytelling, demonstrations, apprenticeship, observation, cultural instruction, practical activities, and interaction with experienced members of the community. These learning processes allow adults to acquire knowledge about locally relevant practices and apply such knowledge in everyday situations. Traditional knowledge education can also create opportunities for adults to interact with knowledgeable community members, exchange experiences, and develop greater awareness of the practices and resources within their local environment. Participation among community adults involves their active involvement in activities that require cooperation, contribution, interaction, and shared responsibility. Adults who possess relevant knowledge about their community may be better positioned to understand the purpose of local activities and contribute their skills and experiences. Traditional knowledge education may therefore influence participation by increasing adults’ awareness of community practices, strengthening their practical knowledge, and creating opportunities for interaction through shared learning experiences. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of community adults within the selected study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on respondents’ exposure to traditional knowledge education and their level of participation. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of traditional knowledge education on participation among community adults. The study is expected to establish that traditional knowledge education has a significant impact on participation among community adults. Adults who are exposed to traditional knowledge learning opportunities are expected to demonstrate greater involvement in relevant community activities and initiatives. The findings may also show that opportunities to acquire and exchange traditional knowledge can strengthen adults’ awareness of local practices and encourage greater involvement in activities that require shared knowledge and cooperation. The findings will have implications for adult education by demonstrating the value of incorporating locally relevant knowledge into adult learning programmes. Adult educators can use storytelling, practical demonstrations, peer learning, apprenticeship approaches, and community-based learning activities to connect adult learners with traditional knowledge. Such approaches can make learning more meaningful while creating opportunities for adults to interact, exchange experiences, and apply acquired knowledge in practical community contexts. The study will be beneficial to community adults, adult educators, traditional knowledge holders, community education providers, cultural organizations, and policymakers. Community adults may benefit from opportunities to acquire useful local knowledge and strengthen their involvement in relevant activities. Adult educators and community education providers may gain insight into ways of incorporating locally available knowledge into adult learning programmes, while policymakers may use the findings to support community-based educational initiatives. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should recognize and incorporate relevant traditional knowledge into learning activities through practical demonstrations, storytelling, mentorship, and experience-sharing sessions. Community education providers should create opportunities for adults to learn from knowledgeable members of their communities and apply acquired knowledge in appropriate activities. The study concludes that traditional knowledge education can provide a meaningful avenue for strengthening adults’ knowledge, interaction, and participation within their communities.
