Impact of Vocational Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Fabric Selection

Abstract

Fabric selection is an important aspect of clothing production because the choice of fabric influences the appearance, comfort, durability, suitability, and overall quality of a garment. Vocational education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and skills needed for effective fabric selection and garment production. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of how to select appropriate fabrics for different clothing purposes due to inadequate practical learning opportunities. This study will examine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of fabric selection. Vocational education may expose adults to different types and characteristics of fabrics, including fabric texture, weight, colour, pattern, fibre content, durability, absorbency, and suitability for particular garments. Learning activities may involve demonstrations, fabric identification exercises, comparative activities, and practical selection tasks. Through these activities, adults can develop the ability to examine fabric characteristics and relate them to specific clothing requirements. Adults’ knowledge of fabric selection refers to their ability to identify, describe, compare, and select fabrics based on their characteristics and intended use. This may include understanding fabric composition, texture, weight, drape, colourfastness, durability, and suitability for different garment styles. Vocational education may strengthen this knowledge by providing practical opportunities for adults to examine different fabrics and make appropriate selection decisions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational, tailoring, or garment-production programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a fabric selection knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of fabric characteristics and selection procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of fabric selection. The study is expected to establish that participation in vocational education may improve adults’ knowledge of fabric selection. Adults exposed to structured vocational learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of fabric characteristics, quality indicators, intended uses, and appropriate selection criteria. The findings may also indicate that practical fabric identification and comparison activities are useful for helping adults develop the knowledge required to make suitable fabric choices for different garments. The study will conclude that vocational education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of fabric selection. It will recommend that vocational programmes incorporate practical fabric identification, comparison exercises, demonstrations, and opportunities for repeated practice. Improving adults’ knowledge of fabric selection may contribute to better garment production decisions, practical competence, vocational development, self-employment, and income-generating opportunities.
