Assessment of Agricultural Extension Agents’ Use of Participatory Communication Methods

Abstract

Participatory communication is an important approach in agricultural extension that encourages two-way interaction between extension agents and farmers rather than relying solely on one-way dissemination of information. It allows farmers to express their experiences, concerns, knowledge, and priorities while extension agents provide technical information and facilitate joint problem-solving. Effective use of participatory communication methods can strengthen farmer engagement, improve understanding, and support more responsive agricultural advisory services. This study will assess agricultural extension agents’ use of participatory communication methods. The study will determine the extent to which extension agents use participatory communication approaches in their interactions with farmers and assess the methods commonly applied during agricultural advisory activities. It will also identify factors that influence the use of participatory communication methods in agricultural extension service delivery. The study will focus on communication methods such as group discussions, farmer-to-farmer communication, participatory demonstrations, focus group discussions, community meetings, feedback sessions, field days, farmer field schools, question-and-answer sessions, and collaborative problem-solving activities. It will also examine agents’ practices relating to active listening, feedback collection, dialogue, local knowledge sharing, joint decision-making, and adaptation of extension messages to farmers’ needs and experiences. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from agricultural extension agents using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their use, frequency, and application of participatory communication methods. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine the extent and patterns of participatory communication use among extension agents. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of use of participatory communication methods among agricultural extension agents. Some agents may frequently use group discussions, demonstrations, farmer meetings, and feedback sessions, while other participatory approaches may be used less frequently. Access to training, availability of communication resources, workload, field conditions, agents’ experience, and institutional support may influence the extent to which participatory communication methods are applied. The study will be useful to agricultural extension agents, extension management authorities, farmers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ associations, rural development organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for improving communication practices within agricultural extension and strengthening approaches that encourage farmer participation, knowledge exchange, feedback, and collaborative decision-making. The study concludes that the effective use of participatory communication methods is important for improving interaction between agricultural extension agents and farmers. It is therefore recommended that extension management authorities strengthen training on participatory communication, active listening, facilitation, feedback management, and community dialogue. Extension agents should also be encouraged to use practical and inclusive communication methods that create opportunities for farmers to contribute their knowledge, experiences, and perspectives during advisory activities.
