Assessment of Agricultural Extension Strategies for Improving Smallholder Farmers’ Agricultural Productivity

Abstract

Agricultural extension strategies are important mechanisms for transferring agricultural knowledge, technologies, skills, and practical information to farmers. Effective extension strategies can support farmers in making informed production decisions, adopting improved farming practices, managing farm resources, and improving agricultural productivity. Smallholder farmers, who often depend on extension services for technical guidance, may benefit from extension strategies that are accessible, relevant, and responsive to their production needs. This study will assess agricultural extension strategies for improving smallholder farmers’ agricultural productivity. It will examine the strategies used by extension agents to communicate agricultural information and provide technical support to smallholder farmers. The study will also assess the extent to which different extension strategies contribute to farmers’ knowledge, adoption of recommended practices, farm management, and productivity. The study will focus on individual farmer visits, group meetings, farmer field demonstrations, field days, training programmes, workshops, radio programmes, mobile communication, digital extension platforms, and other approaches used in agricultural information delivery. It will examine farmers’ access to these strategies, their usefulness, frequency of use, and perceived effectiveness in supporting agricultural production and farm productivity. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from smallholder farmers and relevant agricultural extension personnel using structured questionnaires and appropriate assessment instruments. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine the relationship between extension strategies and agricultural productivity. The study is expected to reveal that the effectiveness of agricultural extension strategies may vary according to the method of information delivery, frequency of extension contact, accessibility of services, and relevance of information provided to farmers. Strategies that provide practical demonstrations, regular interaction, timely information, and opportunities for farmers to apply recommended practices may be associated with improved farm management and higher agricultural productivity. The study will be useful to smallholder farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, agricultural development programmes, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes, improving the selection of appropriate advisory approaches, enhancing farmers’ access to agricultural information, and developing extension strategies that are better suited to the needs of smallholder farming communities. The study concludes that appropriate agricultural extension strategies are important for supporting improvements in smallholder farmers’ agricultural productivity. It is therefore recommended that extension organisations strengthen practical, accessible, timely, and farmer-oriented strategies while improving the capacity of extension agents to use both conventional and modern communication approaches in delivering agricultural advisory services.
