Assessment of Extension Agents’ Knowledge of Participatory Rural Appraisal Techniques

Abstract

Participatory Rural Appraisal techniques are important approaches used by agricultural extension agents to involve rural communities in identifying their needs, analysing local conditions, planning development activities, and making decisions about interventions. These techniques can improve communication between extension personnel and rural communities by recognising farmers’ experiences, local knowledge, priorities, and resources. Adequate knowledge of Participatory Rural Appraisal techniques is therefore important for extension agents who are expected to support community-based agricultural and rural development activities. This study will assess extension agents’ knowledge of Participatory Rural Appraisal techniques. The study will determine the level of knowledge possessed by agricultural extension agents regarding different Participatory Rural Appraisal methods and assess their understanding of the principles and procedures involved in applying these techniques. It will also identify areas where extension agents require additional training and capacity development to improve their use of participatory approaches. The study will focus on extension agents’ knowledge of techniques such as community mapping, resource mapping, transect walks, seasonal calendars, problem ranking, pairwise ranking, wealth ranking, focus group discussions, social mapping, institutional analysis, timelines, and participatory planning. It will also assess agents’ knowledge of community entry, stakeholder participation, facilitation, local knowledge documentation, problem identification, priority setting, and collaborative decision-making. Their sources of information and previous training on participatory approaches will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from agricultural extension agents using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of Participatory Rural Appraisal techniques and their previous exposure to relevant training. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine the level of knowledge and identify areas of strength and knowledge gaps among extension agents. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of Participatory Rural Appraisal techniques among extension agents. Some agents may demonstrate adequate knowledge of commonly used techniques such as community mapping, group discussions, and problem ranking, while knowledge of more specialised participatory tools may be limited. Previous training, professional experience, exposure to rural development programmes, and opportunities to apply participatory techniques in the field may contribute to differences in knowledge levels. The study will be useful to agricultural extension agents, extension management authorities, rural development agencies, farmers’ organisations, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for identifying knowledge gaps and designing capacity-building programmes that strengthen extension agents’ ability to engage rural communities effectively in agricultural and development activities. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of Participatory Rural Appraisal techniques is important for effective community engagement and participatory agricultural extension. It is therefore recommended that extension management authorities strengthen practical training on Participatory Rural Appraisal through workshops, field exercises, community-based learning, and supervised practical sessions. Extension agents should also be provided with opportunities to regularly apply participatory techniques in rural communities to strengthen their competence and effectiveness.
