Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Biosecurity Practices

Abstract

Agricultural biosecurity practices are measures used to prevent the introduction, spread, and transmission of pests, diseases, and other biological hazards that can affect crops, livestock, and agricultural production systems. Effective biosecurity practices can help farmers protect farm resources, reduce production losses, maintain healthy production environments, and improve farm productivity. The adoption of appropriate biosecurity measures is therefore important for sustainable agricultural production and the prevention of avoidable biological risks. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of agricultural biosecurity practices. It will examine the extent to which farmers apply recommended biosecurity measures in their agricultural production activities and determine the level of adoption of different preventive practices. The study will also identify the sources of biosecurity information available to farmers and assess farmers’ access to extension services and technical guidance on agricultural biosecurity.  The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as farm sanitation, equipment cleaning and disinfection, controlled farm access, quarantine and isolation of new or affected animals, proper disposal of farm waste, pest control, water and feed hygiene, safe movement of farm inputs and animals, use of protective clothing, and reporting of suspected disease or pest outbreaks. Attention will also be given to farmers’ adoption of appropriate biosecurity practices for crop and livestock production and their consistency in applying these measures. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their awareness, access to information, and adoption of agricultural biosecurity practices. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine factors associated with farmers’ adoption of biosecurity practices. Adoption levels across different biosecurity measures will also be assessed. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of agricultural biosecurity practices among farmers. Farmers who have greater access to extension services, training, technical information, and biosecurity materials may demonstrate higher levels of adoption. However, inadequate knowledge, limited extension contact, financial constraints, lack of appropriate equipment, poor access to disinfectants and protective materials, and difficulties in maintaining strict farm hygiene may restrict the adoption of some biosecurity practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinary and agricultural authorities, farmer organizations, research institutions, policymakers, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The findings may provide useful information for developing biosecurity education programmes, extension interventions, and support initiatives that encourage farmers to apply effective preventive measures. Improved adoption may contribute to reduced disease and pest risks, lower production losses, and improved farm health and productivity. The study concludes that the adoption of agricultural biosecurity practices is important for protecting farms against biological hazards and supporting sustainable agricultural production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, farm visits, training programmes, and accessible technical information on biosecurity practices. Improved access to appropriate biosecurity materials and stronger collaboration among farmers, extension agencies, veterinary and agricultural authorities, research institutions, and government agencies should also be encouraged.
