Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Asset Inventory Practices

Abstract

Farm asset inventory is an important farm management practice that involves identifying, recording, and maintaining information about the physical and financial resources available on a farm. Proper inventory practices can help farmers keep track of land, buildings, machinery, livestock, equipment, tools, and other productive assets. Adoption of farm asset inventory practices may improve record management, support better farm planning, facilitate asset valuation, and assist farmers in making informed decisions concerning the use and maintenance of farm resources. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of farm asset inventory practices. The study will determine the extent to which farmers identify and systematically record their farm assets and examine the different inventory practices adopted in farm management. It will also assess farmers’ knowledge of the importance of farm asset inventories and identify factors that may influence their adoption of proper asset inventory practices. The study will focus on farmers’ identification and classification of farm assets, recording of asset descriptions, quantity and condition of assets, acquisition dates, purchase values, current values, depreciation records, maintenance information, and disposal of obsolete or damaged assets. It will also examine farmers’ use of notebooks, registers, spreadsheets, mobile applications, and other record-keeping methods for maintaining farm asset inventories. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their adoption of farm asset inventory practices and knowledge of asset management. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine adoption levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine relationships between farmers’ characteristics, access to information, farm size, record-keeping knowledge, and adoption of farm asset inventory practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of farm asset inventory practices among farmers. Some farmers may maintain regular and detailed records of their farm assets, while others may rely on informal or incomplete records. The study may also identify challenges such as limited record-keeping knowledge, inadequate access to digital tools, lack of awareness of inventory benefits, time constraints, and limited extension support as factors affecting adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, farm managers, farmers’ associations, agricultural development agencies, financial institutions, policymakers, researchers, and organisations involved in agricultural resource management. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening farmer education on asset management and encouraging the adoption of systematic inventory practices for improved farm planning and resource utilization. The study concludes that the adoption of farm asset inventory practices can support effective management, documentation, and utilization of agricultural resources. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide farmers with practical training on asset identification, valuation, recording, maintenance, and inventory updating. Farmers should also be encouraged to maintain accurate and regularly updated asset records using appropriate manual or digital inventory systems to improve farm management and decision-making.
