Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Water Storage Techniques
Abstract
Farm water storage is an important agricultural practice that enables farmers to collect and preserve water for use during periods of inadequate rainfall and water scarcity. Effective water storage can support crop production, livestock management, irrigation, and other farm activities while reducing farmers’ dependence on irregular rainfall. However, limited adoption of appropriate water storage techniques may contribute to water shortages, reduced farm productivity, and difficulties in managing agricultural activities during dry periods. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of farm water storage techniques. It will determine the level of adoption of different water storage practices among farmers and examine the extent to which farmers apply appropriate techniques for collecting, storing, maintaining, and using water for agricultural purposes. The study will also identify the major sources of information available to farmers and examine the challenges affecting their adoption of farm water storage techniques. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of techniques such as farm ponds, water tanks, reservoirs, lined storage pits, rainwater harvesting systems, surface water collection, storage containers, and other appropriate farm-level water storage facilities. It will also consider practices related to proper siting, maintenance, water protection, storage capacity, water quality management, and efficient use of stored water for irrigation and livestock activities. Farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, training, demonstrations, finance, equipment, and technical information will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their adoption of farm water storage techniques. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, adoption-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine patterns of adoption and factors associated with farmers’ use of recommended water storage techniques. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of farm water storage techniques among farmers. Farmers with better access to extension services, training, technical information, financial resources, and water management demonstrations may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate storage techniques. The study may also identify challenges such as high installation costs, inadequate technical knowledge, limited access to suitable equipment, poor maintenance, lack of finance, and insufficient extension support as factors affecting adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation and water management agencies, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening programmes that promote farm-level water storage and improving farmers’ capacity to manage available water resources. The findings may also support efforts to improve agricultural productivity, reduce the effects of water shortages, strengthen dry-season farming, and improve farmers’ resilience to rainfall variability. The study concludes that the adoption of appropriate farm water storage techniques is important for improving water availability and supporting sustainable agricultural production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, and advisory services on suitable water storage techniques. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt appropriate storage facilities and improve their access to finance, technical support, equipment, and maintenance services to ensure effective farm water management.
