Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Good Hygiene Practices in Food Production

Abstract

Good hygiene practices are essential in food production because they help prevent contamination and maintain the safety and quality of agricultural products. Farmers’ activities during production, harvesting, handling, and initial processing can influence the hygienic condition of food products before they reach consumers. Poor personal hygiene, unsafe water, improper waste disposal, contaminated equipment, and inadequate handling practices may increase the risk of food contamination. Assessing farmers’ adoption of good hygiene practices is therefore important for understanding existing practices and areas requiring improvement. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of good hygiene practices in food production. The study will determine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended hygiene practices during agricultural production and handling. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of food hygiene and identify the major sources of information that influence their adoption of hygienic practices in food production. The study will focus on farmers’ personal hygiene, handwashing practices, use of clean water, cleanliness of farm tools and equipment, proper waste disposal, protection of harvested produce from contamination, hygienic harvesting practices, safe handling of agricultural products, cleanliness of storage areas, and prevention of contact between food products and harmful substances. It will also examine farmers’ access to agricultural extension information, food safety education, training programmes, and other sources of hygiene-related information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge and adoption of good hygiene practices in food production. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to assess the level of adoption and factors associated with farmers’ hygiene practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of good hygiene practices among farmers. Some farmers may demonstrate regular adoption of practices such as handwashing, use of clean water, proper produce handling, and maintenance of clean equipment, while others may have limited adoption of recommended hygiene measures. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate access to clean water, limited hygiene information, poor sanitation facilities, cost of appropriate equipment, and insufficient food safety training. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, food safety authorities, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ associations, policymakers, researchers, and organisations involved in food production and public health. The findings may provide useful information for developing targeted extension programmes, strengthening food hygiene education, and promoting safer agricultural production and handling practices. The study concludes that the adoption of good hygiene practices is important for maintaining food safety and reducing contamination risks during agricultural production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant food safety organisations strengthen farmer education through regular training, demonstrations, farm visits, and practical hygiene guidance. Farmers should also be encouraged to consistently apply recommended hygiene practices to improve the safety, quality, and acceptability of agricultural products.
