Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Farm Labour Record-Keeping Practices

Abstract

Farm labour is an important component of agricultural production because it influences the timely completion of farm operations, production costs, and overall farm performance. Proper labour record-keeping enables farmers to document the number of workers engaged, hours or days worked, tasks performed, wages paid, and other labour-related expenses. However, many farmers may have limited adoption of systematic labour record-keeping practices, which can make it difficult to monitor labour use and determine the actual cost of farm operations. Assessing farmers’ adoption of improved farm labour record-keeping practices is therefore important for understanding their level of record management and identifying areas requiring improvement. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of improved farm labour record-keeping practices. It will determine the level of adoption of recommended labour record-keeping practices and identify the specific records maintained by farmers. The study will also examine farmers’ sources of information and exposure to agricultural extension services, training programmes, farm management education, and other forms of technical support relating to farm labour management. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of records relating to the number of workers employed, labour days and hours, tasks performed, wages and salaries paid, casual labour expenses, family labour contributions, seasonal labour requirements, labour productivity, and labour-related farm expenditures. It will also consider the use of notebooks, farm record books, spreadsheets, mobile applications, and other tools for maintaining labour information. Farmers’ access to extension services, training, and farm management information will also be examined. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their adoption of improved farm labour record-keeping practices, sources of information, and access to extension services. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, adoption level assessment, frequency distributions, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to examine factors associated with farmers’ adoption of improved farm labour record-keeping practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of improved farm labour record-keeping practices among farmers. Farmers with greater access to extension services, farm management training, and relevant agricultural information may demonstrate higher adoption of systematic labour records. The study may also identify challenges such as lack of record-keeping skills, limited awareness of the benefits of labour records, inadequate training, low literacy levels, and difficulties in using digital record-keeping tools. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farm management specialists, farmer organisations, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, research institutions, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural development. It may provide useful information on farmers’ labour record-keeping practices and the areas where additional training and advisory support are required. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing simple and practical record-keeping tools that farmers can use to monitor labour activities and expenses. The study concludes that adoption of improved farm labour record-keeping practices is important for effective farm management and efficient control of labour resources and costs. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, and advisory services on simple labour record-keeping methods. Farmers should also be encouraged to maintain regular and accurate records of labour activities and expenses to support better farm planning, cost management, decision-making, and overall farm productivity.
