Assessment of Farmers’ Awareness of Agricultural Land Documentation Procedures

Abstract

Agricultural land documentation is an important aspect of land management because it provides evidence of land rights, ownership, tenancy, and other legally recognized interests in agricultural land. Proper documentation can help farmers establish clearer land-use rights, support access to agricultural services and investment opportunities, and reduce the likelihood of disputes arising from unclear land arrangements. Farmers’ awareness of the procedures involved in documenting agricultural land is therefore important for promoting secure and effective land management. This study will assess farmers’ awareness of agricultural land documentation procedures. The study will determine the level of farmers’ awareness of the procedures required for documenting agricultural land and examine their understanding of the importance of proper land documentation. It will also identify the major sources of information available to farmers and the challenges that may limit their awareness of agricultural land documentation requirements. The study will focus on farmers’ awareness of land identification and verification, preparation of relevant land documents, registration procedures, land-use records, tenancy documentation, transfer and inheritance documentation, payment of applicable fees, and the roles of relevant land administration authorities. It will also examine farmers’ access to information from agricultural extension agents, land officers, community leaders, legal practitioners, government agencies, and other sources concerning agricultural land documentation. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their awareness and understanding of agricultural land documentation procedures. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine farmers’ awareness levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine relationships between farmers’ characteristics, access to information, and awareness of land documentation procedures. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ awareness of agricultural land documentation procedures. Some farmers may have adequate knowledge of basic documentation requirements, while others may have limited understanding of registration processes, required documents, applicable fees, and the responsibilities of relevant authorities. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate information, complex procedures, limited access to land administration offices, documentation costs, and reliance on informal land arrangements. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, land administration authorities, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ associations, policymakers, legal practitioners, community leaders, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for improving farmer education and strengthening information dissemination on agricultural land documentation procedures. The study concludes that farmers’ awareness of agricultural land documentation procedures is important for promoting secure and effective agricultural land management. It is therefore recommended that relevant agricultural and land administration institutions provide farmers with clear and accessible information on documentation requirements and procedures through extension programmes, community education, workshops, and advisory services. Farmers should also be encouraged to obtain appropriate guidance and properly document their agricultural land interests to support secure and sustainable land use.
