Abstract
Climate-smart agricultural practices are important for improving agricultural productivity, strengthening farmers’ ability to manage climate-related challenges, and promoting the sustainable use of agricultural resources. Farmers are increasingly exposed to changes in rainfall patterns, temperature, drought, flooding, soil degradation, and other environmental conditions that can affect farm productivity. Adequate awareness of climate-smart agricultural practices can help farmers understand available approaches for managing these challenges and improving the sustainability of their farming activities. This study will assess farmers’ awareness of climate-smart agricultural practices. The study will determine the level of farmers’ awareness of practices designed to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen resilience to climate-related conditions, and promote efficient resource management. It will also identify areas of high and low awareness among farmers and examine the extent to which farmers understand the benefits and application of different climate-smart practices. The study will focus on farmers’ awareness of practices such as drought-tolerant and improved crop varieties, crop diversification, crop rotation, intercropping, conservation agriculture, minimum tillage, mulching, residue management, agroforestry, water harvesting, efficient irrigation, soil fertility management, integrated pest management, and improved livestock management. The study will also assess farmers’ awareness of practices that contribute to soil conservation, water conservation, climate resilience, and efficient use of agricultural inputs. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and awareness assessment items designed to measure their knowledge and understanding of climate-smart agricultural practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Correlation analysis may also be used to examine relationships between selected farmer characteristics and their level of awareness of climate-smart agricultural practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ awareness of climate-smart agricultural practices. Farmers may demonstrate relatively high awareness of common practices such as crop diversification, improved crop varieties, mulching, and water conservation, while awareness of practices such as agroforestry, residue management, efficient irrigation, and integrated pest management may vary. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps that require additional agricultural extension education, climate information, and practical demonstrations. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, climate and environmental agencies, government agricultural institutions, non-governmental organisations, agricultural development programmes, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may assist stakeholders in designing targeted awareness programmes and extension activities that promote farmers’ understanding of climate-smart agricultural practices. It may also provide useful information for developing farmer-oriented training and communication strategies that support climate resilience and sustainable agricultural production. The study concludes that adequate awareness of climate-smart agricultural practices is important for helping farmers understand appropriate responses to climate-related agricultural challenges. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, field demonstrations, climate awareness campaigns, and technical advisory services on climate-smart agriculture. Extension programmes should provide practical information on improved varieties, soil and water conservation, crop diversification, agroforestry, efficient resource use, and other climate-smart practices to improve farmers’ awareness and support sustainable agricultural development.
