Assessment of Farmers’ Awareness of New Agricultural Technologies

Abstract

Farmers’ awareness of new agricultural technologies refers to the extent to which farmers possess information and knowledge about modern technologies developed to improve agricultural production, resource management, efficiency, and farm productivity. Awareness is an important stage in the process of technology use because farmers are more likely to consider technologies that they understand and have adequate information about. Agricultural extension services play an important role in creating awareness by providing farmers with information, demonstrations, training, and advisory support on emerging agricultural technologies. This study will assess farmers’ awareness of new agricultural technologies. It will determine the level of farmers’ awareness of selected modern agricultural technologies and examine the sources through which farmers obtain information about these technologies. The study will also assess farmers’ knowledge of the uses, benefits, and applications of new agricultural technologies in farm production. The study will focus on farmers’ awareness of improved production technologies, digital agricultural tools, improved farm machinery, precision agriculture technologies, improved irrigation technologies, climate-smart technologies, improved seed technologies, post-harvest technologies, and modern farm management tools. It will also examine farmers’ exposure to extension agents, agricultural demonstrations, farmer training programmes, radio programmes, social media, agricultural cooperatives, and other sources of technology information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their awareness and knowledge of new agricultural technologies. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while awareness indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between farmers’ awareness and selected information and extension-related factors. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of awareness of new agricultural technologies among farmers. Farmers who have regular contact with agricultural extension agents, participate in demonstrations and training programmes, and have greater access to agricultural information may demonstrate higher levels of awareness. Limited extension coverage, inadequate information, poor access to technology demonstrations, financial constraints, limited digital literacy, and insufficient opportunities for farmer training may reduce awareness of emerging agricultural technologies. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural researchers, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, technology developers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on the technologies that farmers are familiar with and identify gaps in agricultural technology information. The findings may also assist extension organisations in designing appropriate awareness campaigns, training programmes, demonstrations, and information delivery strategies for improving farmers’ knowledge of new agricultural technologies. The study concludes that adequate awareness of new agricultural technologies is important for improving farmers’ knowledge and readiness to consider modern approaches to agricultural production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen technology awareness programmes through regular farm demonstrations, practical training, field days, radio and digital information platforms, farmer group activities, and improved communication between farmers, extension personnel, researchers, and technology developers.
