Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Land Leasing Arrangement

Abstract

Agricultural land leasing arrangements refer to agreements through which farmers obtain temporary rights to use agricultural land in exchange for rent, payment, produce, or other agreed forms of consideration. Land leasing provides farmers with opportunities to access farmland without owning it and can support agricultural production where access to land is limited. Adequate knowledge of leasing arrangements is important because farmers need to understand lease terms, duration, payment obligations, land-use conditions, and the rights and responsibilities of both landowners and tenants. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural land leasing arrangements. It will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge regarding the procedures, terms, conditions, and responsibilities associated with agricultural land leasing. The study will also examine farmers’ understanding of lease duration, rental payments, land-use rights, renewal arrangements, agreements, and obligations between landowners and tenant farmers. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of formal and informal land leasing arrangements, lease agreements, rental payments, lease duration, land-use conditions, renewal procedures, land boundaries, tenant responsibilities, landowner responsibilities, and dispute resolution mechanisms. It will also examine farmers’ sources of information on agricultural land leasing, including landowners, family members, community leaders, farmer groups, agricultural extension agents, government land agencies, and legal or professional advisers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of agricultural land leasing arrangements. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while knowledge indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the level of farmers’ knowledge and factors associated with their understanding of agricultural land leasing arrangements. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural land leasing arrangements. Farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services, land-related information, farmer groups, community discussions, and professional advice may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge. However, limited awareness of formal leasing procedures, reliance on verbal agreements, inadequate documentation, unclear lease terms, limited access to legal information, and poor understanding of land-use rights may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, landowners, community leaders, government land agencies, agricultural researchers, non-governmental organisations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on farmers’ understanding of agricultural land leasing and identify areas requiring additional education and advisory support. The findings may also assist relevant institutions in developing farmer education programmes that promote clearer and more informed land leasing arrangements. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of agricultural land leasing arrangements is important for enabling farmers to make informed decisions about farmland access and use. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant land institutions provide farmers with practical education on lease agreements, rental obligations, land-use rights, documentation, renewal conditions, and dispute resolution through advisory services, community workshops, farmer groups, and accessible land information materials.
