Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Produce Shelf-Life Extension Techniques
Abstract
Agricultural produce shelf-life extension is an important aspect of postharvest management because it helps maintain the quality, safety, and marketability of farm produce for longer periods. Fresh agricultural products are often highly perishable and may experience deterioration due to moisture loss, microbial activity, unsuitable temperatures, physical damage, and poor handling. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate shelf-life extension techniques is therefore important for reducing postharvest losses and improving the utilization and marketing of agricultural produce. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural produce shelf-life extension techniques. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of recommended methods for extending the storage life of agricultural produce and identify the techniques commonly known to farmers. It will also assess farmers’ understanding of the factors that influence produce deterioration and their knowledge of appropriate practices for maintaining produce quality after harvest. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural produce shelf-life extension, postharvest handling, temperature management, moisture control, proper packaging, storage conditions, ventilation, sorting and grading, hygienic handling, preservation methods, cooling techniques, drying, storage monitoring, and produce quality maintenance. Information will be obtained from farmers involved in the production and handling of perishable agricultural produce to identify their knowledge levels and specific areas of knowledge gaps. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to determine farmers’ level of understanding of shelf-life extension techniques, while appropriate inferential statistical methods may be used to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of produce preservation practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding agricultural produce shelf-life extension techniques. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of sorting, packaging, drying, cooling, and appropriate storage conditions, while others may have limited knowledge of temperature control, moisture management, hygienic handling, and modern preservation techniques. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps that contribute to premature deterioration and postharvest losses. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, postharvest management specialists, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, produce marketers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for developing farmer education programmes focused on practical methods of extending the shelf life of agricultural produce. The findings may also assist stakeholders in promoting affordable and accessible postharvest technologies that can improve produce quality, reduce losses, and increase farmers’ income. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of shelf-life extension techniques is important for effective postharvest management and preservation of agricultural produce. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, practical demonstrations, and advisory services on appropriate cooling, packaging, storage, drying, moisture control, hygiene, and other preservation techniques. Improved access to relevant technical information and practical training may enhance farmers’ knowledge and contribute to reduced postharvest losses and improved quality of agricultural produce.
