Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Community Agricultural Volunteer Programmes

Abstract

Community agricultural volunteer programmes provide opportunities for farmers and rural community members to participate in agricultural information sharing, farmer support, technology dissemination, and community-based agricultural development activities. Such programmes can complement formal agricultural extension services by promoting the exchange of locally relevant knowledge and encouraging farmers to participate in agricultural development initiatives. However, the effectiveness of community agricultural volunteer programmes may depend partly on farmers’ awareness and understanding of their roles, activities, benefits, and methods of participation. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of community agricultural volunteer programmes. The study will determine farmers’ level of awareness and understanding of community agricultural volunteer activities, identify the sources through which farmers obtain information about such programmes, and assess their knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of agricultural volunteers. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of the services and agricultural information that may be provided through community volunteer programmes. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of community agricultural volunteer programmes, programme awareness, volunteer roles, agricultural information sharing, farmer mobilization, community participation, agricultural advisory support, technology dissemination, farmer-to-farmer learning, community agricultural activities, volunteer responsibilities, and access to programme information. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their level of knowledge and identify areas where gaps in understanding may exist. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field assessment methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to assess farmers’ overall level of understanding of community agricultural volunteer programmes, while relevant inferential statistical techniques may be used to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics, information sources, and their knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding community agricultural volunteer programmes. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of volunteer roles, agricultural information sharing, community mobilization, and farmer-to-farmer support, while others may have limited understanding of programme activities and opportunities for participation. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ awareness of how community agricultural volunteers can support access to agricultural information and technical services. The study will be useful to agricultural extension agents, community agricultural volunteers, farmers, agricultural development agencies, non-governmental organizations, agricultural cooperatives, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for improving community-based agricultural programmes and developing appropriate farmer education strategies. The findings may also assist extension organizations in strengthening communication between farmers and community agricultural volunteers. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge is important for effective participation in and utilization of community agricultural volunteer programmes. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant development organizations strengthen farmer awareness activities, community meetings, practical orientation programmes, and information dissemination on the roles and activities of agricultural volunteers. Clear communication about volunteer services and opportunities for farmer participation may improve farmers’ understanding and utilization of community agricultural volunteer programmes.
