Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Educational Farm Tourism Services

Abstract

Educational farm tourism services involve the use of farms as learning environments where visitors, students, and other groups can gain practical knowledge about agriculture, food production, livestock management, environmental conservation, and rural life. These services may include guided farm tours, practical demonstrations, crop and livestock observation, farm-based learning activities, and educational workshops. Farmers’ knowledge of such services is important because it can influence their ability to identify suitable educational opportunities and develop farm activities that provide meaningful learning experiences for visitors. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of educational farm tourism services. It will determine farmers’ level of awareness and knowledge of different educational farm tourism activities, examine their understanding of the requirements for providing educational services on farms, and assess their knowledge of the potential benefits of educational farm tourism to farm enterprises, visitors, and rural communities. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of guided farm tours, agricultural demonstrations, crop production education, livestock learning activities, environmental education, farm-based practical lessons, agricultural workshops, visitor interaction, educational materials, farm facilities, and safety requirements. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of planning educational activities, managing visitors, presenting agricultural information, and maintaining suitable learning environments on farms. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of educational farm tourism services and related management practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ levels of knowledge and identify specific knowledge gaps relating to educational farm tourism. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding educational farm tourism services. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic activities such as farm tours, crop demonstrations, and livestock observation, while others may have limited knowledge of structured educational programmes, visitor management, and the development of learning facilities. The study may also identify areas where farmers require additional information and extension education. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agritourism operators, educational institutions, tourism organisations, rural development agencies, government agricultural agencies, and researchers. It may provide useful information for developing extension programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of educational farm tourism and encourage the development of farms as practical learning environments. The findings may also help farmers diversify their enterprises and generate additional income through educational tourism services. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge is important for the development and effective provision of educational farm tourism services. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension services provide relevant education and practical training on educational farm tourism, visitor management, agricultural communication, activity planning, safety, and facility development to enable farmers to effectively provide educational experiences for farm visitors.
