Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of efficient farm water storage methods. Efficient water storage is important for ensuring the availability of water for agricultural activities during periods of limited rainfall and irregular water supply. Adequate knowledge of appropriate water storage methods can help farmers reduce water losses, conserve available resources, and maintain a more reliable supply of water for crop and livestock production. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of efficient farm water storage methods, including the use of farm ponds, water tanks, reservoirs, storage containers, lined storage structures, and rainwater harvesting systems. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of methods for reducing evaporation, preventing contamination, controlling leakage, maintaining storage structures, and protecting stored water from unnecessary losses. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of efficient farm water storage methods. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of efficient farm water storage methods and identify areas of adequate and inadequate knowledge. It is also expected to provide information on farmers’ understanding of water collection, storage structure selection, leakage prevention, evaporation control, water quality protection, routine maintenance, and efficient use of stored water. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, water management institutions, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on farmers’ knowledge of efficient water storage methods. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and demonstrations that improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate water storage technologies and management practices. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of efficient farm water storage methods is important for promoting effective water conservation and sustainable agricultural production. It will recommend regular extension education, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance on water storage structure selection, maintenance, leakage prevention, evaporation control, and water quality management to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and improve farm water management.
