Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm-Based Tourism Opportunities

Abstract

Farm-based tourism involves the use of agricultural farms and related resources to provide tourism, educational, recreational, and cultural experiences for visitors. It can include activities such as farm tours, crop harvesting experiences, livestock interaction, nature walks, recreational activities, agricultural demonstrations, farm product sales, and other visitor-oriented services. Farmers’ knowledge of farm-based tourism opportunities is important because adequate knowledge can help them identify suitable activities, utilize available farm resources, and explore tourism as an avenue for agricultural enterprise diversification. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of farm-based tourism opportunities. It will determine farmers’ level of awareness and knowledge of different tourism activities that can be developed on farms, examine their understanding of the requirements for participating in farm-based tourism, and assess their knowledge of the potential economic and social benefits associated with farm-based tourism activities. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of farm tours, agricultural demonstrations, crop harvesting experiences, livestock interaction, nature-based activities, recreational services, educational farm visits, farm hospitality, farm product sales, cultural experiences, visitor management, and tourism facilities. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of enterprise planning, visitor safety, marketing, sanitation, customer service, and other requirements associated with farm-based tourism development. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of farm-based tourism opportunities and related enterprise requirements. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ overall knowledge levels and identify specific knowledge gaps. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding farm-based tourism opportunities. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of common opportunities such as farm tours, crop harvesting, agricultural demonstrations, and recreational activities, while others may have limited knowledge of specialized tourism services, visitor management, marketing, and enterprise development requirements. The study may also identify areas where farmers require additional information and practical education. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agritourism operators, tourism organisations, rural development agencies, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for developing extension programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of farm-based tourism opportunities and support agricultural enterprise diversification. The findings may also assist farmers in identifying suitable tourism activities that can generate additional income and improve the utilization of farm resources. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of farm-based tourism opportunities is important for farmers seeking to diversify their agricultural enterprises and participate in tourism-related activities. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension services provide practical education on farm-based tourism opportunities, enterprise planning, visitor management, safety, marketing, hospitality, and facility development to strengthen farmers’ capacity to develop viable farm-based tourism enterprises.
