Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Emergency Communication Procedures

Abstract

Farm emergency communication procedures are important for helping farmers receive, understand, and share timely information during emergencies that may threaten crops, livestock, farm equipment, infrastructure, and agricultural livelihoods. Effective communication can support rapid decision-making, coordination of emergency responses, access to assistance, and protection of farm resources. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate communication procedures is therefore essential for ensuring that emergency information is transmitted quickly and accurately within farming communities. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of farm emergency communication procedures. It will determine farmers’ level of knowledge regarding appropriate channels and procedures for reporting farm emergencies and receiving emergency information. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of emergency contact systems, reporting procedures, warning messages, communication with extension agents, communication with relevant agricultural authorities, and the sharing of emergency information with other farmers. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of farm emergency communication procedures, emergency reporting channels, agricultural extension communication, emergency contact systems, early-warning information, communication networks, emergency information sharing, farm risk management, and disaster response communication. It will also assess farmers’ sources of emergency information and determine their awareness of appropriate procedures for communicating emergencies involving floods, fire outbreaks, livestock incidents, crop damage, equipment failures, and other farm-related hazards. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of farm emergency communication procedures and sources of emergency information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and relevant inferential statistical techniques to examine differences in farmers’ knowledge according to selected characteristics and communication experiences. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of farm emergency communication procedures. Farmers with regular contact with agricultural extension agents and greater access to agricultural information may demonstrate better knowledge of appropriate emergency communication channels and reporting procedures. The study may also reveal gaps in farmers’ awareness of emergency contact systems, warning messages, and procedures for communicating farm emergencies to relevant authorities and support agencies. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, emergency management organisations, local authorities, non-governmental organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for improving emergency communication systems within farming communities and strengthening extension programmes that provide farmers with practical emergency information. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing clear and accessible communication procedures for farm-related emergencies. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of farm emergency communication procedures is important for improving farmers’ ability to communicate risks and respond appropriately to agricultural emergencies. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide farmers with regular education on emergency communication procedures, establish accessible communication channels, promote awareness of emergency contact systems, and strengthen the dissemination of timely warning information to farming communities.
