Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Emergency Preparedness

Abstract

Farm emergencies such as fires, floods, severe weather events, livestock incidents, equipment failures, accidents, and other unexpected hazards can cause significant damage to agricultural resources and livelihoods. Adequate emergency preparedness enables farmers to anticipate potential hazards, protect farm assets, respond appropriately to emergencies, and reduce avoidable losses. Farmers’ knowledge of emergency preparedness is therefore important for strengthening farm safety, improving emergency response, and enhancing the resilience of agricultural households and communities. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of farm emergency preparedness. It will determine the extent to which farmers understand appropriate measures for preparing for potential emergencies and responding effectively when they occur. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of emergency planning, hazard identification, emergency communication, evacuation procedures, first-aid preparedness, protection of farm inputs and equipment, and access to emergency assistance. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of farm emergency preparedness, hazard identification, emergency planning, emergency communication, evacuation procedures, first-aid preparedness, farm safety, emergency supplies, weather-related risks, fire preparedness, livestock emergencies, and agricultural risk management. It will also assess farmers’ sources of emergency preparedness information and determine the contribution of agricultural extension agents, government agencies, fellow farmers, media platforms, and other information sources to farmers’ preparedness knowledge. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of farm emergency preparedness and sources of emergency information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and relevant inferential statistical techniques to determine variations in farmers’ knowledge according to selected characteristics, farming experience, extension contact, and access to emergency information. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of farm emergency preparedness. Farmers who have regular access to agricultural extension services and emergency information may demonstrate greater knowledge of hazard identification, emergency planning, communication procedures, evacuation measures, and protection of farm resources. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ knowledge of emergency supplies, first-aid preparedness, emergency contact procedures, and appropriate responses to different types of farm hazards. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, emergency management organisations, local authorities, non-governmental organisations, farmer cooperatives, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening farmer education and emergency preparedness programmes. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical training materials and communication systems that improve farmers’ ability to prepare for and respond to farm emergencies. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of farm emergency preparedness is important for reducing the potential effects of agricultural emergencies and protecting farmers, farm resources, and livelihoods. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular education on emergency preparedness, hazard identification, emergency communication, evacuation procedures, first-aid readiness, and protection of farm assets. Strengthening access to timely emergency information and practical preparedness training may improve farmers’ capacity to manage farm emergencies effectively.
