Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Labour Performance Records

Abstract

Farm labour performance records are important for monitoring the activities, productivity, attendance, and efficiency of workers involved in agricultural production. Proper documentation of farm labour activities can help farmers understand how labour is utilized, identify areas of inefficiency, plan farm operations, and make informed management decisions. However, many farmers may have limited knowledge of the importance and appropriate methods of maintaining labour performance records. Assessing farmers’ knowledge in this area is therefore important for improving farm labour management and overall enterprise planning. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of farm labour performance records. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of the purpose, types, and methods of maintaining farm labour performance records. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of recording workers’ attendance, tasks completed, hours worked, labour output, task allocation, work completion, and labour productivity. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of farm labour performance records, labour attendance records, task records, work-hour records, labour output records, productivity records, task allocation, work completion records, labour utilization, record organization, and use of labour information for farm management decisions. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their understanding of appropriate labour record-keeping practices and identify areas where knowledge gaps may exist. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate farm record observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to assess farmers’ level of understanding, while relevant inferential statistical methods may be applied to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of farm labour performance records. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding farm labour performance records. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic attendance and task records, while others may have limited understanding of recording labour hours, work output, productivity, and task completion. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ ability to organize and use labour performance information for planning and monitoring farm operations. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farm managers, agricultural cooperatives, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide information for developing extension education programmes on farm labour record management and improving farmers’ managerial skills. The findings may also assist extension personnel in promoting simple and practical record-keeping methods that farmers can use to monitor labour utilization and improve farm management. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of farm labour performance records is important for effective labour management and informed farm decision-making. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education on labour record keeping, including attendance documentation, task allocation, work-hour recording, output measurement, and productivity monitoring. Practical demonstrations and simplified record-keeping formats should also be promoted to encourage farmers to maintain and use accurate farm labour performance records.
