Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Product Origin Labelling

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of farm product origin labelling. Farm product origin labelling involves providing information that identifies the geographical, farm, community, or production source of agricultural products. Such information can support product identification, traceability, transparency, quality assurance, and consumer confidence within agricultural markets. Adequate knowledge of origin labelling can therefore help farmers understand the importance of identifying the source of their products and maintaining relevant information throughout production and marketing activities. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of farm product origin labelling. It will specifically examine farmers’ awareness and understanding of origin labels, the types of information used to identify product sources, appropriate labelling procedures, and the importance of origin information for traceability and agricultural marketing. The study will also identify farmers’ major sources of information on origin labelling and examine the challenges that may limit their knowledge and application of appropriate origin labelling practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ knowledge, awareness, sources of information, and exposure to farm product origin labelling. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques may be used where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of farm product origin labelling. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension education, market information, training programmes, and organized agricultural activities are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of origin labelling practices. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to the identification of production locations, farm sources, production dates, producer information, and other details that can be used to establish the origin of agricultural products. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ associations, produce marketers, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural value-chain development. The findings are expected to highlight areas where farmers require additional education and technical support on product origin identification and labelling. Improved knowledge may help farmers maintain accurate product information, strengthen traceability, improve market transparency, and meet the information requirements of buyers and consumers. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of farm product origin labelling is important for effective product identification, traceability, and agricultural marketing. It will recommend strengthened extension education, practical demonstrations, farmer training programmes, and simplified guidelines on appropriate origin labelling procedures. Improving farmers’ knowledge of product origin labelling is expected to contribute to better documentation, transparency, quality management, accountability, and efficiency within agricultural production and marketing systems.
