Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Recreation Opportunities

Abstract

Farm recreation opportunities refer to leisure and recreational activities that can be developed and offered on farms, including nature walks, farm tours, outdoor games, fishing, animal interaction, crop harvesting experiences, relaxation activities, and other forms of farm-based recreation. Such opportunities can contribute to the diversification of farm enterprises, attract visitors, and create additional sources of income for farmers. Farmers’ knowledge of available recreational opportunities is therefore important for identifying, developing, and managing activities that can enhance the use and economic value of farm resources. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of farm recreation opportunities. It will determine farmers’ level of awareness and knowledge of different recreational activities that can be developed on farms, examine their understanding of the requirements for providing farm-based recreational services, and assess their knowledge of the potential benefits of farm recreation to agricultural enterprises and rural communities. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of farm tours, nature-based recreation, outdoor games, fishing activities, animal interaction, crop harvesting experiences, relaxation spaces, recreational facilities, visitor activities, and farm-based leisure services. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of basic requirements for developing recreational opportunities, including suitable farm facilities, visitor safety, cleanliness, environmental management, and customer-oriented services. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of different farm recreation opportunities and related management requirements. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ overall level of knowledge and identify areas where knowledge gaps exist. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding farm recreation opportunities. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of simple recreational activities such as farm tours, nature walks, and crop harvesting experiences, while others may have limited knowledge of more organized recreational services and their management requirements. The study may also identify specific areas where farmers require additional information and practical education. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agritourism operators, rural development agencies, tourism organisations, government agricultural agencies, and researchers. It may provide useful information for designing extension education programmes that can improve farmers’ understanding of farm recreation and encourage the development of suitable recreational activities. The findings may also support farmers in identifying opportunities for enterprise diversification and additional income generation. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge is important for the identification and development of viable farm recreation opportunities. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension services provide relevant education and practical training on farm recreation activities, visitor management, safety, facility development, and basic recreational enterprise management to help farmers make effective use of available farm resources.
