Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of First-Aid Procedures for Farm Injuries
Abstract
Farm injuries can occur during various agricultural activities, including the use of farm tools and machinery, handling of livestock, application of farm inputs, harvesting, transportation, and other field operations. Appropriate first-aid knowledge is important because immediate and correct response to injuries can help reduce complications before professional medical attention is obtained. Farmers’ knowledge of basic first-aid procedures can therefore contribute to safer agricultural activities and improve their ability to respond appropriately to common farm injuries. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of first-aid procedures for farm injuries. It will determine the extent of farmers’ knowledge of appropriate first-aid responses to common injuries such as cuts, burns, falls, sprains, fractures, animal-related injuries, and chemical exposure. The study will also examine farmers’ awareness of basic first-aid materials, appropriate emergency responses, injury reporting procedures, and situations in which professional medical attention should be sought. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of first-aid procedures, farm injuries, emergency response, first-aid materials, wound management, burn management, fracture and sprain response, chemical exposure, animal-related injuries, and farm safety practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of first-aid information and determine the extent to which agricultural extension services, health workers, training programmes, and other information sources contribute to their knowledge of basic first-aid procedures. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of first-aid procedures and their sources of safety information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and relevant inferential statistical techniques to examine variations in farmers’ knowledge according to selected characteristics, training exposure, and access to agricultural safety information. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of first-aid procedures for farm injuries. Farmers who have received relevant safety education or have greater access to agricultural and health information may demonstrate better knowledge of appropriate first-aid responses. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ knowledge of injury assessment, wound care, burn response, chemical exposure, emergency referral, and the proper use of first-aid materials. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, health workers, agricultural development agencies, farm safety organisations, cooperatives, non-governmental organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for developing practical safety education programmes that improve farmers’ preparedness to respond to injuries. The findings may also assist agricultural extension and health agencies in integrating basic first-aid education into farmer training and agricultural safety programmes. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of first-aid procedures is an important component of farm safety and emergency preparedness. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant health organisations provide farmers with regular training on basic first-aid procedures, emergency response, and the proper use of first-aid materials. Practical demonstrations and accessible safety information should also be promoted to improve farmers’ ability to respond appropriately to farm injuries before professional medical care is available.
