Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Food Safety Documentation Requirements

Abstract

Food safety documentation involves the systematic recording and maintenance of information relating to food production, handling, storage, processing, and distribution. Proper documentation is important in agricultural production because it supports traceability, accountability, quality control, compliance with food safety requirements, and the identification of potential safety problems. Farmers who understand food safety documentation requirements are better positioned to maintain appropriate records and demonstrate compliance with recommended food safety practices. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of food safety documentation requirements. It will examine farmers’ understanding of the types of records required to support safe agricultural production and food handling activities. The study will also identify farmers’ major sources of information on food safety documentation and determine areas where knowledge gaps may exist. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of production records, input-use records, pesticide application records, fertilizer records, harvest records, storage records, processing records, hygiene records, livestock health records, and produce traceability documentation. It will also examine farmers’ awareness of the importance of accurate and timely documentation in maintaining food safety, tracking agricultural products, and supporting quality assurance throughout the food production chain. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires containing questions and knowledge assessment items relating to food safety documentation requirements. The data will be analysed using frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ level of knowledge and identify major areas of inadequate understanding. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of food safety documentation requirements. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic production and input records, while others may have limited understanding of pesticide-use documentation, hygiene records, traceability information, and storage or processing records. The findings may also indicate that access to agricultural extension information, food safety training, and other agricultural information sources is associated with farmers’ level of knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, food safety agencies, agricultural cooperatives, food processors, regulatory institutions, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for designing extension programmes and training activities aimed at improving farmers’ understanding of food safety documentation. The findings may also support efforts to strengthen traceability, record keeping, quality assurance, and compliance with food safety requirements within agricultural value chains. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of food safety documentation requirements is important for promoting safe agricultural production and effective traceability. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide farmers with practical training on the types, purposes, and proper maintenance of food safety records. Extension agents should also encourage regular and accurate documentation of farm production and food handling activities to improve food safety management and compliance.
