Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Government Agricultural Intervention Programmes

Abstract

Government agricultural intervention programmes are important mechanisms for supporting farmers, improving agricultural production, strengthening rural livelihoods, and addressing challenges affecting the agricultural sector. Such programmes may provide farmers with improved inputs, financial support, training, extension services, mechanisation opportunities, market assistance, and other forms of agricultural support. Farmers’ knowledge of these programmes is important because adequate awareness can help them identify available opportunities, understand eligibility requirements, and access relevant benefits. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of government agricultural intervention programmes. It will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of selected government agricultural interventions and assess their understanding of the objectives, benefits, eligibility requirements, and participation procedures associated with such programmes. The study will also identify the major sources through which farmers obtain information about government agricultural intervention programmes. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of government programmes relating to agricultural inputs, credit and financing, mechanisation, extension services, market support, agricultural training, youth and women empowerment, climate-smart agriculture, crop and livestock development, and other interventions designed to support agricultural development. It will also consider farmers’ access to extension agents, government officials, farmer organisations, cooperatives, radio, television, mobile phones, social media, community meetings, and other sources of programme information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of government agricultural intervention programmes and sources of information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean knowledge scores, knowledge indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine farmers’ level of knowledge and factors associated with their knowledge of government agricultural intervention programmes. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of government agricultural intervention programmes among farmers. Farmers with regular contact with extension agents, active participation in farmer organisations, access to communication technologies, and greater exposure to agricultural information may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge. However, inadequate information dissemination, limited extension coverage, poor communication networks, language barriers, delayed programme information, and limited access to official sources may constrain farmers’ knowledge of available government interventions. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, development organisations, farmer cooperatives, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information on farmers’ knowledge of government agricultural intervention programmes and identify information gaps that may limit their awareness and participation. The findings may also assist programme administrators in improving information dissemination and communication strategies to ensure that intervention opportunities reach intended agricultural beneficiaries. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of government agricultural intervention programmes is important for enabling farmers to identify and access available agricultural support opportunities. It is therefore recommended that government agricultural agencies and extension organisations strengthen farmer education and information dissemination through extension visits, community meetings, radio, mobile platforms, cooperatives, and other accessible communication channels. Programme information should be communicated clearly, regularly, and in a timely manner to improve farmers’ knowledge and participation.
