Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of GPS Navigation for Agricultural Activities

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of GPS navigation for agricultural activities, focusing on farmers’ understanding of Global Positioning System technology and its applications in farm management and agricultural operations. GPS navigation can provide farmers with accurate location information that supports farm mapping, field boundary identification, route planning, navigation to farm locations, and management of spatial agricultural information. Adequate knowledge of GPS navigation can therefore improve farmers’ ability to use location-based information for efficient agricultural activities. The study will examine farmers’ knowledge of basic GPS concepts, including location coordinates, distance measurement, navigation, waypoint recording, and field mapping. It will also assess farmers’ understanding of the use of GPS navigation for identifying farm boundaries, locating farm plots, planning movement within and between farms, recording farm locations, and supporting other agricultural activities. In addition, the study will identify farmers’ major sources of information about GPS navigation, including agricultural extension personnel, fellow farmers, training programmes, agricultural institutions, digital platforms, and technology providers. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of GPS navigation and its applications in agriculture. The data obtained will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to examine farmers’ knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of GPS navigation for agricultural activities. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension education, digital technologies, practical training, and agricultural information may demonstrate better understanding of GPS navigation and its applications. However, limited digital literacy, inadequate access to GPS-enabled devices, poor technical support, high technology costs, and insufficient training opportunities may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural technology providers, farmers’ organizations, and development agencies on the need to improve farmers’ knowledge of GPS navigation. Strengthening extension education through practical demonstrations, hands-on training, and simplified technical guidance may improve farmers’ ability to use GPS technology for agricultural activities. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of GPS navigation can support farmers in carrying out location-based agricultural activities and making more informed farm management decisions. It will recommend increased extension education, practical GPS training, improved access to affordable GPS-enabled devices, and stronger collaboration between extension personnel, technology providers, and farmers to promote effective use of GPS navigation in agriculture.
