Abstract
Grain cleaning and processing technologies play an important role in improving the quality, safety, storage life, and market value of agricultural grains. Proper cleaning helps remove dirt, stones, chaff, damaged grains, and other impurities, while appropriate processing methods can improve the usability and quality of grain products. Farmers’ knowledge of these technologies is important for effective post-harvest management, reduction of losses, and production of quality grain products. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of grain cleaning and processing technologies is therefore important for identifying existing knowledge levels and areas requiring further agricultural education and technical support. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of grain cleaning and processing technologies. It will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of available grain cleaning and processing technologies and examine their understanding of the appropriate methods for handling and processing different types of grains. The study will also identify farmers’ sources of information on grain processing technologies and assess the extent to which they understand the benefits and applications of improved technologies. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of grain sorting, sieving, winnowing, mechanical cleaning, drying, shelling, threshing, milling, grinding, dehulling, grading, storage, and packaging technologies. It will examine farmers’ knowledge of the appropriate use and maintenance of cleaning and processing equipment, moisture control, hygiene, contamination prevention, quality preservation, and safe grain handling. The study will also consider farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, training, demonstrations, processing facilities, technology providers, farmer organisations, and other sources of technical information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of grain cleaning and processing technologies and obtain information on their sources of technical information and exposure to agricultural extension activities. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine relationships between relevant factors and farmers’ knowledge of grain cleaning and processing technologies. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of grain cleaning and processing technologies among farmers. Farmers who have greater exposure to agricultural extension services, practical demonstrations, processing information, and technology providers may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge. The study may also identify knowledge gaps concerning equipment operation, moisture management, hygiene, contamination control, maintenance, and quality preservation. Limited access to improved equipment, high technology costs, inadequate technical information, and insufficient training may be identified as factors affecting farmers’ knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, grain processors, farmer organisations, agricultural technology providers, government agencies, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information on farmers’ existing knowledge and the areas where additional education and technical support are required. Agricultural extension organisations may use the findings to develop practical training and demonstration programmes, while technology providers and agricultural development agencies may use the information to improve access to appropriate grain cleaning and processing technologies. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of grain cleaning and processing technologies is important for improving post-harvest management, grain quality, food safety, and value addition. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmers’ education through practical demonstrations, technical training, and advisory services on grain cleaning and processing technologies. Relevant stakeholders should also facilitate farmers’ access to affordable equipment, technical support, maintenance services, and appropriate information to improve the effective management and processing of grain products.
