Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Local Seed Selection Criteria

Abstract

Local seed selection involves the identification and selection of suitable seeds from locally available crop varieties based on characteristics considered important for successful crop production. Farmers may use criteria such as seed size, colour, maturity, physical appearance, health, viability, resistance to damage, and previous field performance when selecting seeds for planting. Adequate knowledge of appropriate local seed selection criteria is important for maintaining good planting materials, supporting crop establishment, and preserving desirable characteristics of locally adapted crop varieties. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of local seed selection criteria. It will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of the characteristics used in selecting seeds, examine their understanding of appropriate selection procedures, and assess their knowledge of the importance of selecting healthy and viable seeds from locally available planting materials. The study will also identify areas where farmers may have inadequate knowledge of effective local seed selection. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of seed size, seed colour, seed maturity, physical appearance, seed health, seed damage, germination capacity, seed purity, previous crop performance, varietal characteristics, and suitability for local production conditions. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of selecting seeds from healthy plants, removing damaged or diseased seeds, and maintaining selected seeds under appropriate storage conditions before planting. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of local seed selection criteria and practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ overall knowledge levels and identify specific areas of knowledge gaps. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding local seed selection criteria. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic criteria such as seed size, colour, physical appearance, and previous crop performance, while others may have limited knowledge of less visible indicators such as seed viability, health, purity, and varietal suitability. The study may also identify differences in farmers’ understanding of traditional seed selection practices and recommended seed quality principles. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, community seed organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for designing extension education programmes that strengthen farmers’ knowledge of effective local seed selection. The findings may also help farmers improve the quality of planting materials, reduce the use of poor-quality seeds, and maintain desirable local crop varieties. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of local seed selection criteria is important for maintaining suitable planting materials and supporting sustainable crop production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension services provide practical education on seed selection criteria, seed health, viability, purity, varietal characteristics, and proper storage practices to improve farmers’ capacity to select and maintain quality local seeds.
