Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Modern Preservation Methods for Perishable Farm Produce
Abstract
Perishable farm produce such as fruits, vegetables, milk, fish, and other fresh agricultural products can deteriorate rapidly after harvest when appropriate preservation methods are not applied. Postharvest deterioration may result in significant losses, reduced product quality, lower market value, and reduced income for farmers. Modern preservation methods can help extend the shelf life of perishable farm produce and maintain its quality. However, effective application of these methods requires adequate knowledge of appropriate preservation techniques and their proper use. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of modern preservation methods for perishable farm produce. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of modern preservation techniques, identify the methods commonly known to farmers, and assess their understanding of the principles involved in preserving perishable agricultural products. It will also identify areas of knowledge gaps relating to the handling, preservation, storage, and maintenance of perishable farm produce. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of modern preservation methods, cold storage, evaporative cooling, solar drying, refrigeration, modified atmosphere storage, hermetic storage, controlled temperature management, dehydration, hygienic handling, packaging, moisture control, shelf-life extension, and postharvest quality management. Information will be obtained from farmers involved in the production and handling of perishable farm produce to determine their understanding of modern preservation practices and the extent of their knowledge of appropriate preservation methods. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to determine farmers’ levels of understanding, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques may be used to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of modern preservation methods. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding modern preservation methods for perishable farm produce. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic preservation practices, while others may have limited knowledge of technologies such as cold storage, evaporative cooling, solar drying, refrigeration, and improved packaging. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps that contribute to poor preservation, quality deterioration, and postharvest losses of perishable agricultural products. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, postharvest management organizations, food processors, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for developing farmer education and extension programmes on modern preservation technologies. The findings may also assist relevant stakeholders in promoting practical and affordable preservation methods that can improve the quality, shelf life, marketability, and economic value of perishable farm produce. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of modern preservation methods is important for effective management and reduction of postharvest losses of perishable farm produce. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant agricultural organizations strengthen farmer education, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory services on modern preservation technologies. Farmers should be encouraged to adopt appropriate preservation methods such as cold storage, evaporative cooling, solar drying, improved packaging, and temperature management according to the characteristics of the produce being handled.
